So i was wondering if there is anything that can be shot out of a 30-06 riffle other than 30-06 ammo. I know this sounds dumb, but i think i remember someone telling me that the 30-06 has a different round that can also be shot out of it. Thanks.

.30-06 that's prety much it. There is quit a few differnt bullet weights and a lot of differnt bullet types, but in the end .30-06 is .30-06

Some ammo makers played around with sabot rounds for the '06 over the years but not much came of it.

If you mean like you would see with .357 Mag/.38 Special then no

Nope.

The .30-06 can be shot out of the .30-03, which was the original roud adopted in the M1903 Springfield. When the military switched from a 220 gr. round nose to a 150 gr. spitzer, they shortened the now-unneccesarily-long neck, making the .30-06 we still have today.

Nope. You may be thinking about Remington Accelerators though. A .30-06 case with a .22 calibre bullet in a sabot. Extremely poor accuracy killed them fairly quickly.

The .30-06 is extremely versatile. You can get or work up loads for bullet weights from about 100 grains to about 250 grains. You can work up cast bullet loads that are ideal for practice, small game, or plinking.

You can get "subcaliber" devices which allow you to shoot much less powerful loads. My favorite is the Hammond Game Getter which allows you to shoot a 00 buckshot, propelled by a nailsetting rimfire blank. I use mine when squirrels try to carry me off my stand in deer season.

maybe you are thinking of a russian 762.54, being able to fire a 308.

:scrutiny::uhoh:Whoah! You might want to double check that before you try it.

I suspect that it would likely result in a split (and possibly unextractable case).

55 grain Accerlators are still available from Remington in 30-30 and 30-06, or you can make your own, but pin point accuracy is a problem.

Okay, I'll say it...

The 30.06 round is the most versatile ammunition on the market today.

Now I'm open to reticule.

With the appropriate chamber adapters (http://www.mcace.com/adapters.htm) you could fire 30 Mauser, 32 Short Colt, 32 Long, 32 H&R, 30 Carbine, 32 ACP, or 7.62x39mm in your 30'06.

There is nothing that should be shot out of a 30-06 unless it is 30-06. Many different loads can be had from light 55gr bullets to 220gr heavy bullets.

I'm guessing it may be that the OP's friend was thinking of .308win and 7.62x51, instead of 30-06.
Also, I have a couple boxes of those .22 cal sabot rounds from Remmington for my 30-06 that my dad had bought years ago.Keep meaning to try some out for the heck of it, but never have.

A chamber insert was developed to allow 7.62 NATO ammo in the .30/06 M-1 Garand. They are still being made and if you look you can find them. Basically you put the thing in the chamber w/some pematex on the outside and (in theory) if will fire-form to the chamber on the first round fired and stay in there-temporarily. To get it out, you use a broken shell extractor.

I have one and the shell extractor for my Garands. Here's the important part--I have NEVER used it and would only consider doing so in the event of DIRE EMERGENCY.

It would no doubt work for the first round, but the problem (I have been told) is that they can end up being ejected with a fired case--thus leaving you open to the possibly VERY BAD SITUATION of not noticing that you are about to chamber a 7.62NATO round into an un-adapted .30/06 chamber.

But it comes back to what everyone else is saying--you can get more types of loadings for the .06 than just about any other rifle cartridge on the planet.
