Greetings all! First post here.

So anyways, I recently got a S&W .357 640 as my main carry gun, and I'm having a bit of a hard time deciding on my ammo choice. I purchased Hydrashocks in .38 special for the first two chambers (in case I have to fire it in my truck, I'd like to at least have the possibility of hearing again!) and Hyrdashock .357 for the last three chambers. I went with Hydrashock just because I was familiar with it after having used it in my Berreta 92FS for years.

After I got home I started reading about the stopping power debates, and have come upon a question. After reading through several places on the internet, I've found claims that the 158 grain hydrashocks have an 88% rate of 1 shot stopping power, while the 124 grain Remington SJHP has a 96% rate. I understand that all the research and what not is highly subjective, but what would cause such a discrepancy in power? Would it be something like a higher velocity of a lighter round?

Second, someone has suggested to me that I might consider loading the first two rounds with rat shot and then going .357 after that. Has anyone had any experience with that stuff? I know its not good beyond about 10 yards, but quite honestly, until I get either about 10 more hours of range time or some Crimson Trace grips for this gun 10 yards is about as far as I'm willing to shoot it.

Thanks in advance for any advice you guys have!

I have a Model 60, the 640's brother. I carry 158gr Gold Dots and 145gr Win Silver Tips. I don't know about one stop shots but I prefer heavier bullets.

I would shoot Hydrashoks' or Gold Dot's.

My M640 just loves 145gr Winchester Silvertip .357 Magnum ammo. It is extremely accurate when fired from my M640 from 15 yards out and even from 25 yards out.

i have two 640-1s...one i had Magna-Ported so i can comfortably fire full house magnums in it...the porting makes feel like a .38spl with +ps...

i can shoot my standard 640-1 with full hose magnums but after a qualification course my hand is tingling.....if i only had to shoot the 5 rounds in it then porting would not be an issue, but if have to shoot an extended period like i do, youd appreciate the porting.

i carry this as my ankle BUG on duty and have not experienced any of the porting issues some folks tout on the forums...

ive shot it held in tight to my body, at night, and from a coat pocket....nothing caught fire and the blast isnt anymore noticable to me than my standard 640-1 but it is a lot easier to shoot. maybe with special cameras and decible readers it is, but in real world usage i havent noticed anything other than a substancial decrease in muzzle flip and twist.

the best $$$ ive spent on a gun mod.

Speer 135gr Gold Dot short Barrel. Good performance less flash.

"It depends."

Personally, I would not want to shoot one of the 125-gr. hot rods in a 640, simply due to blast--although maybe jerry's magna-porting would solve that.

The 145-gr. Silvertips ArchangelCD mentioned, and possibly the Speer GDSB 357 Magnum round (970 fps, 135-gr. bullet; 147-gr. available) would probably be my first choice.

I see no advantage to "rat shot"--and if you are that far up against it that you're firing inside the cab, you probably have bigger worries than your ears at that moment.

i would add that the 145gr. Win STHP is my favorite .357magnum load for self defense.

but its not carried in any store near me and shipping charges make it cost prohibitive just to have a personal favorite.

wal-mart sells the Remington 125gr. SJHP which is the exact loading that got the .357magnum all its notoriety. all in all it makes little difference on the recieving end of either of these loads.

Sorry I forgot to add my M640-1 also has a Mag-na-port barrel.

I have started carrying the 135 GD in mine and they seem to like each other.

I carried an issued 640 for a few years. I could qualify 100% with magnums but they are not the best for rapid recovery. I comprised with Federal 147 +P+.

Carry whatever quality ammo you can shoot well.
