I'm interested in buying a digital trail cam with IR for setting up in promising bear haunts. Would probably also use it prior to deer and elk hunting. I don't know where to start and what to look for in a good trail cam. Any experiences out there? What could I expect to purchase for less than $250.?

Springmom and I bought a "Wild View" IR cam and it is working well on our ranch. A 1 GB SD card will hold 3000+ hi-res images, and it runs on 'C' batteries.
One of the features we like is you can set it for "bursts" of 3 shots or short video recording (talk about selective fire LOL). After a burst it will sleep for 1, 2, or 5 minutes then start over.
Range is about 30 feet, so you have to plan set-up carefully to cover the spot you want to watch.
Here is a sample from the other night...
