say the situation arose where you need to shoot a bg at close range with a handgun you own
which handgun in your arsenal would you most trust? (concealability isnt a factor)
for me it would be my s&w 296 snubnose 44spec

S&W 686 Plus 357 Magnum. Super reliable, pointable and scary accurate. The only handgun that I can shoot as well is my S&W K-22. It just works for me. 'Course, I'd rather have my 12 ga.

Doesn't hurt that it looks cool too  .

My Norinco 213, a RussianTokarev TT-33 clone manufactured in China in 9x19mm. It is the most reliable and most accurate handgun I own. I've put a spare barrel modified to 9x23 on it. I shoot CorBon Pow'rball in 9x23 Winchester which is one heck of a self defense round.

At close range it would be my Russian Makarov. It has never hiccuped. For longer range I would trust my Ruger P95DC. For even longer range I would trust my Tokarev. It has jammed only once in five years. The other have never jammed.

If ammo availability was an issue I would stick with my P95DC.

a carry gun is either trusted or not. 'most trusted' is akin to 'most unique'. i have difficulty assigning levels of trust in this situation. that said, i will stipulate that i 'trust' my Sig p239-40 'most' on days ending in y.

Maybe a part of the question should be "which gun can I do without" after shooting a BG, in that Law Enforcement will likely take your gun for a while, maybe a long while...not to hijack the thread, but what about inexpensive, reliable guns that wouldn't leave a big hole in your gun collection?

Makarov, S&W Model 67, Norinco 213 or the chrome monster, my CZ 52. Reliability-wise, they're all about the same: excellent. The Norinco (9MM) and the CZ pack more of a wallop than the other two, though. If had to choose one shot, it'd be the CZ with Wolf hollowpoints, the most wallop of all.

My Sig P220. The gun just won't stop. It just keeps going and going and never malfunctions except for when I've done something stupid like putting untested aftermarket parts in it (converting back to stock fixed that). I love them and have grown to be most comfortable with them.

I'd also take a G19 any day of the week. I like Glocks. They are simple, reliable, and just plain work which is all anyone really needs. Yeah the grip angle takes a bit more effort because I tend to point high, but I don't mind overlooking that compared to the other benefits their guns have.

say the situation arose where you need to shoot a bg at close range with a handgun you own
which handgun in your arsenal would you most trust? (concealability isnt a factor)

Trust for what?

Trust to function properly -- feed, fire, extract and eject, sure as clockwork? Makarov.

or

Trust to stop the troll? Ruger .45 or XD .40.

glock56534

Difficult to choose, easy to answer....I have 3 Glocks, with more than 10,000 rounds through each of them, all with zero malfunctions. Glock 19, 22, and 33. All pistols that a baboon couldn't jam if it tried.

My HK USP SK .40 cal has about 15,000 rounds through it, and has zero malfunctions.

I trust every one of these firearms with my life, and I don't think anyone would disagree with me when I say that, amongst others, you cannot go wrong by carrying these firearms.

You should never trust your life with something that "might" malfunction, because it will do just that when you need it most.

4" Stainless GP100 with "Ruger" hogue grips and a orange millet steel front sight.

This gun feels so familiar and comfortable in my hand. The trigger is very smooth. The gun is extremely reliable, and very accurate. This is easily my most trusted gun.

I'd like to add a reliable autoloader in the next few years. If I were to add an autoloader to the safe today, the next gun would probably be a G17, and XD9, or a Sig p250. I also like the Ruger SR9, but I just bought another Revolver from Ruger that has very bad fit and finish. I'm not going to buy any more Rugers until I see how Ruger handles my complaint. If they fix my new gun without charging me, I'll buy more guns from them (sp101 in .327 magnum, a second GP100, and maybe an SR9). If they give me a hard time about my complaint, I will never buy another gun from them ever again. I will also rip them every chance I get. Ruger's revolver designs are tops in my book, but their QC is piss poor right now. My trust in Ruger firearms are at an all-time low. This coming from a person that probably has posted over 100 posts on this forum about how great Ruger Revolvers are. Ruger Revolvers are great when they are built correctly.

Kurt
April 8, 2008, 12:08 PM
A Ruger D/A revolver, with the nod going to a Speed-six. There hasn't been a more reliable handgun in my book and it has some proven power levels going with it.

I've read with interest some of the other replies and made some mental, historical notes from personal experiences. I will add that for me - it's all about reliability first.

As for the Sigs, back-in-the-day they were my very first choice in a defensive pistol "for all seasons and for all reasons". Then I had a Sig P-series get some type of crud in the firing pin channel / safety mechanism that affected the firing sequence ... and it's nowhere near a normal cleaning breakdown to fix that problem. I keep my guns clean and this problem wasn't obvious for me until too late. It stands as my biggest surprise in the hobby ... bar none.

While I dearly love Smith and Wesson revolvers, I've had multiple and memorable issues over the years with too many K and N-frame models to ever call them dead-reliable in such a serious situation. The J-frames are in a class by themselves and if other real-world factors were requested here - they'd be my first choice (five-for-sure).

I've been in proximity to more than one CZ 75-ish pistol problem at ranges over the years to ever want to put such confidence in that one, but a proven Browning Hi-Power or Series 70 1911 Colt would make the grade in the semi-auto class for me.

It seems like any particular makers design has to be around for awhile to properly work-out all the possible bugs that might, some day, prevent it from going bang in the most serious situation the O/P outlined here. IMO, once they make a change (like a Series 80 or internal lock) ... it's right back to ground-zero for a very long while.

:)

If concealability isn't a factor then i'd go for my mossberg 500 12 gauge shotgun...lol. OK if you're speaking about handgun i would definatly go for my HK Mark 23. It was awful expensive and is also awfully big but i love it. Not a single jam.

2nd choice would be my ruger P95. A bit smaller than the HK and just as many jams (0) :neener:

BOXRULES, have you checked out DoubleTap ammunition yet? Their 10mm were fired out of a Glock 20 with a shorter (4.6) barrel, yet still got 1350 fps with the 180 gr Controlled expansion JHP, and 1300 fps with the 200 gr. Beartooth FMJ (for hunting / woods defense)! Check it out!

www.doubletapammo.com

I saw Buffalo Bore using a 5" barrel to fire their 10mm 180 gr. and got 1350; 200 FMJ got 1200.

I'm assuming with a 5" barrel shooting DoubleTap ammo, you can roughly get 1390 to 1400 fps with the 180 gr. Controlled expansion JHP rounds, and 1340-1350 fps shooting the 200 gr. Beartooth!

DoubleTap seems to also have a bigger variety of 10mm rounds to pick from! From 135 gr. to 230 gr.

That jogged my memory. I'll go with my Gunsite CCO. It's been 100% reliable from the start and it's a Series 70 system.

I'd add a few do-dads for fit, and exchange some parts for forged/machined ones. I'd then add some night sights and a more durable final finish.

S&W Sigma 40VE with a 180gr Hornady TAP in the pipe

feel free to laugh but then please proceed to stand in front of it and tell me how that feels.

what u have and what it costs mean nothing if it is not reliable. and reliability means maintenance and alot of practice, not to mention testing different ammo. i will shoot a gun untill i am sure it will always go bang, even if it means doing some shadetree gunsmithing. if it still refuses to consistantly go bang then i get rid of it because a gun u cant trust is a gun u dont need.

with that said, its all about whats in reach. if all i have is my 9x18 FEG then thats what i use. i know it will go bang and thats all that counts... well that and hitting the target of course

now, in a perfect world in that instance i'd rather have a 12 ga... the distant 2nd would be a 4" .357 with 125gr JHP but i dont own those yet

btw, anyone who would, even for a second, base their decision on which gun they would cry about less when the cops seize it after a shooting has bigger and deeper problems than any armed attacker could ever pose...

If I had no choice and was up against the wall, no where to evade...

Hmmm...

If it absolutely, positively has to get done, then make mine a 1911.

I can control it, double tap it, and drill the BG with accurate, sustained volleys of 230g mortar balls. To me, this spells relief.

In WW II, 9mm Axis bullets would connect with our GI's, they would return fire with .45acp and kill their attackers. Numerous accounts of this by both Allied and Axis combatants. I'm not saying the 9mm Axis rounds weren't sometimes fatal, just that ours were more consistently so and more immediate in effect.

Since unreliable guns aren't allowed at my house, it'd be a 6-shot 38, a six-shot 357, a five shot 44 Special or an 8-shot 45ACP, depending on what room I was in. If I had time to pick one, I'd grab the 13-shot EAA Witness in 40, just in case capacity became a factor. I practice with them all, so it wouldn't matter much!

I don't think I've hit this one yet so here's my pic (picks).....

Ruger Service Six, if I were in a survival situation and had to trust one gun to not fail its difficult not to pick a revolver. My Service Six is simple, reliable, accurate, tough, no frills, no feed concerns, just pull the trigger and I'm certain it will go bang.

That is easy...anything made by Glock!!! That is why I use them and have them!!!

reading these types of comments get lame. My Glock 30 jammed with FMJ ammo one time. Iv seen other glocks jam once or twice as well. Glocks are a Reliable design and everything, but the hype is ridiculously over the top. They are NOT any more reliable than a Sig or a CZ, or an XD, or whatever.

I got the Glock because it was a good deal, and I thought I would carry it. Its a great gun, but to be honest, It never gets any trigger time: the P-22 and CZ-75 get all the attention. As for carry, Thinner profile, more compact pistols see all the action there as well. I honestly don't know why I still have it....

Really a toss up. I trust all of my handguns in a life or death situation or I would not have them long.

But to try and narrow it down to speciffics It would probably be a Glock G17 - just because its the handiest go get too.

Runners up are SIG P229 and a 1980's vintage Ruger Security Six.

Well, the three guns I hold the most near and dear to my heart are:

Glock 21
S&W 629 Classic .44 mag.
Glock 27

I can shoot slightly more accurately with the Glock 21 at close range (25 yards and less).

The S&W with it's 8 3/8 " barrel might be a bit too much gun (size wise).

Why use the Glock 27 when I can shoot better with the Glock 21?

I say the Glock 21. I've shot many rounds through it without a single failure.

But I'm not one of those guys that believes Glock is superior to everything else out there. I just happen to like them and they like me.

I say you should use the gun you know will work for you - whatever it happens to be. The gun you know won't fail you and the gun you know you can shoot best.

As much as I love my Kimbers, Sigs, and H&Ks, I'd have to give the nod to my Glock 19. As The Lone Haranguer said early on in this thread, it's one of the guns I've had the longest and it's been ever faithful to me since day one. True, there are better performers out there, but when it comes down to it, I still grab the Glock 19 everyday when I head out the door. It points naturally for me, is lightweight and accurate, has the same trigger pull from the start to the finish, and is easy to carry. I keep coming back to it after all these years.

Never had a problem with my .44 Anaconda, and I shoot it a lot... not exactly stealth though. I most often carry a Colt Cobra and I'd like to think that six .38s up close would get me through a tight spot. I'd feel fairly comfortable with my wife's P-90 too, although I've primarily been a revolver guy up to now. I'm in the autoloader market though.

it's nice to see such a variety of preferences! that's what makes this hobby/obsession great! we all like something different.

i have three i'd trust in a "situation"

1. is my glock 19c. over 5250 rounds(it is nearly seven months old) ZERO failures and it begs for more action each time i take it to the range. NEVER have I owned a handgun like this! i love it and will N E V E R sell it!

2. my russian makarov. much like the glock, the thing works! ball, hp, whatever. forget to clean it? no problem, load up the mags and have at it!

3. my fn five-seven. great gun, very modern. and how can you not giggle a little loading what looks like mini .223 in to a pistol! :)

My most trusted handgun: my Colt Custom Gun Shop Combat Commander .45 ACP, along with Winchester 185 gr. Silvertip ammuntion. A superb combination that I shall continue to depend on for many years to come.

If I don't trust a pistol it gets removed from the collection, but of the handguns I might carry out, the S&W 638 is the least likely to have any problems.

My Glock 23 or my S&W 3913. Neither one has ever failed me.

Given just one bg at close range, my S&W 637 revolver. Made well, and I like the idea that I can just pull the trigger again if I am unfortunate enough to hear "click".
On the other hand, my bedside gun is my Beretta Px4 Storm - it makes me happy because of its reliability and larger capacity should it ever be needed.

GLOCK 21 semi auto, or a S&W 686-1 for a revolver.

All my handguns are reliable (so far) so I wouldn't wet my pants if I found myself in that situation with any of them. I generally carry two since, in my experience, all machinery will at some point fail no matter how well designed or maintained.

But to pick from the litter...

In revolvers I'd take my S&W M-29 six inch loaded with Speer Short Barrel 200 grain JHP .44 magnum ammo (good mid range load).

In an autoloader, it would be my.45 ACP 1911 Springer TRP loaded with Hornady TAP 230 grain .45 +P JHPs.

Just my thoughts.

Respectfully,

DarkSoldier

I'm not sure if I have the right to answer on this topic, seeing as the only time I "carry" a Pistol or Revolver is when I'm outside city limits and shooting at a friends farm, or range, etc. Also I only own two revolvers at this time, both I would trust in a worst case senerio (hopefully never happens). One is aCommercial made Post-WWII Webley & Scott Ltd. Mk. IV .380" Revolver, the other is a 1966-1967 era S&W Model 10-5 .38 Special Revolver with a standard 4" barrel.

If I had to choose which to trust a bad situation, it would be the S&W Model 10. The Webley is a great revolver, really enjoy shooting it, but I'd rather have a .38 Special than having a .380" (aka .38 S&W) in a crisis. Other than hearing some people not like the .38 Special Cartridge, I have not heard much bad said about the actual S&W Model 10 (or many other K-frame S&Ws) Revolver.
Thanks
Mark

Since I care enough to send the very best, I would deliver DoubleTap 165gr Gold Dots with my Delta Gold Cup. IT"S NEVER MALFUNCTIONED!!!
Yeah right.
So many of these gun owners here are truly blessed to have such marvelous weapons that have NEVER so much as hiccuped or had a bad round chamber up. Never limp wristed a shot. Never dropped a mag and bent the lips a little. Keep shooting lads, your time is coming.

Any of my Glocks (19, 20, 27, 31, 33). If it has to be a round gun, either of my 629s (4" and 6").
