Recoil control of the service calibers.

How does everyone rate the controllability of the service calibers? I'm one of those people who will not sacrifice an ounce of shootability for any real or percieved ballistics performance advantage.

IMO, if a larger caliber is capable of better performance, but the shooter is not capable of performing well enough with it, there is no advantage gained.

Here's how I rate them:

1) 9mm
2) .45acp - Even with loads like the 230gr+P Ranger, recoil in a larger platform isn't bad.
2 1/2) 180gr .40 - I find the heavy .40 loads to have less snap and more of the slower push associated with the .45acp. It is a tad sharper, do to higher pressure's and generally being fired in smaller weapons, but to me, it is by far the easiest shooting bullet weight in this caliber, excluding ammunition that has been down-loaded.
3) 125gr 357 Sig - Lot's of bark but recoil isn't to bad, atleast in the P226, just that much faster than a hot 9mm but with more of a push. Don't know if I'd like it in a compact platform, though I imagine a P226ST would be pretty sweet in this caliber.
4) Full power 155/165gr .40's - Both snappy and heavier recoil, really seems to torque in the hand, slowing shot to shot recovery times. Don't care for these weight's at all in small platforms.

From my experience I would agree with your ranking.

I would say Im close to agreeing with your rundown on recoil. But the guns size, weight, barrel length, ergonomics and alot more, have to be
thrown into the equation also. If the guns were all the same platform
Id say something like this.

9mm is easily the most controllable and offers the fastest/most accurate followup shots for me.
45 ACP next
40 S*W
357 Sig
357 Mag......

The loads being used may move them around the list alittle.

Shoot well
