A Handgun Conundrum

I had this discussion with a friend of mine...

Lets say someone offered to buy you one hangun and ammunition that had to last you at least 1 year. Your budget is no more than $750.00, and you could not buy or shoot ANY ADDITIONAL guns and / or ammunition for the year. What would you choose, a cheaper gun, and more ammo to shoot for the year, or a more expensive gun and less ammo to shoot for the current year, but then have a "better" gun to shoot all the ammo you want the following year.

My choice;

A CZ 75B 9mm (worth about $350.00), and $400.00 of Win Value Pack Ammo (about 3400 rounds);

What would your choice be?

That sounds like a good choice to me... The CZ75 is likely going to be my next handgun anyway.

I don't think I'd give up shooting my 1911 or .357 tho...

Used .22 S&W Revolver and as much ammo as the leftover cash could buy. :D

I'd go w/ a used S&W mod 19.

To choose between the S&W 19 and the 75B. Tough choice.

I had a great Model 19, and still have a pre-B 75. I'd get the 75, too, but the 19 is NOT to be sneered at. (Or, my favorite S&W, the 547, which shoots the same ammo as the 75/75B... Got one of those, too.)

Mak I guess. Not that crazy about the pistol but I like to shoot, a lot.

I've never had a .22 in revolver or auto form reliable enough to trust as a defense weapon.

In that situation a 9mm would be VERY tough to beat given some of the prices I'm seeing on 9mm ammo these days.

The other logical choice would be a revolver in .38 or .357 and shooting .38 Spl. ammo.

P95 will do just fine ...... approx half cost on gun if bought new ... the rest ..... ammo!!:evil:

Used gun ........ even more ammo! :evil: :evil:

An old Ruger Single-Six Convertible and lots of LR and WMR.

I say old because mine is 30 years old, has a great trigger and has never failed to fire.

CZ is good - got one, and a centerfire revolver is good - got them too, but you can't beat the price of .22 LR ammo.

You realize the average criminal would take any gun and six bullets and double his investment in an afternoon?

Us law abiding types would pick up an FEG hi-power 9mm ($250) and spend the rest on bulk packed ammo.

CZ 75B $350
CZ .22LR Conversion kit $200
Fitted holster $50
Fitted Belt $25
Magazine Carrier $10
250 Rds 9mm Ball $60
4 Bricks .22 Hi-Vel $60

Geoff
Who notes all prices are negotiable and you might buy more .22 ammo if you bought all from the same dealer at the same time.;)

Heck with the peashooter! A pawnshop 870 for 150 bucks with the balance expressed in Wal-mart value packs of 12 ga. That's like 4200 rounds of 12 ga. :)

S&W 19 and a lee loader with 357 dies and 100 cases.

you could pick up the 19 used police trade in for around $250
and the reloading setup for around $75,.http://www.gunaccessories.com/Lee/Kits/handkit.jpg and bullet mold and handles for $55

thats $380

10,000 primers $150

8 lbs 231 $120
100 cases $10

thats $280

total $660

8lbs == 7000grns * 8 = 56,000grains

load with 5.6 gr and mold your own 158 gr LSWC

thats 10,000 rounds first year

a S&W .44mag revolver and a couple boxes of ammo should do it. I can hunt with it, shoot a big hole in targets, self-defense? :D

That is a tricky question because I would like a $750 gun but I would also like to shoot.

I would normally choose a S&W M19, Ruger MKII, Beretta 92FS or something like that but I have those guns and I would want something new.

I think I would choose a S&W light weight snubbie. I don't have one and I want one. I could get a 649 or a Titanium ultra light and spend any left over money on reloading supplies to make the ammo last.

Obvious solution: a part-time job to pay for more guns and ammunition.

Darn. Someone already beat me to it.

CZ 75 (BD for me) - $350
Kadet conversion - $200
10,000 or so rounds of .22 - remaining $200

I guess I'd buy another .45 caliber SIG-Sauer P220A;
but I might have to wait until year's end to try it out?:D :uhoh:

A good used 4" .38sp revolver (like a model 15) and all the LSWC 158gr ammo you can get for the balance.

I might be with Stickjockey on this. As much as I'd LOVE another gun, $750 for a years worth of ammo is OK (~3500 rounds of Win White Box .45acp, 7500 rounds Win White Box 9mm, 4100-4200 rounds of .38spl, 3000 rounds .357mag) but when you subtract even a cheap handgun from that you are really limiting your practice. My first choice would be to simply get ammo for one of my current guns and be limited to that (close between my Daly 1911, CZ 75B and S&W 65LS).

If that isn't an option, and you must buy a gun with it, I'd go cheap to have as much practice as possible (you only said that is all I can buy/shoot that year, presumably I could still load up my 1911, CZ, revolvers, etc. with existing ammo for HD or CCW if allowed).

My choices if I must buy a gun (in order):

First place: Just about any .22 handgun. .22 is so cheap that even with only a hundred or two left that is a lot of shooting (if you have a gun that will handle the cheap bricks, at ~$10 for 500 rounds even only $100 left gives you 5000 rounds of practice).

Tied for Second: A midpriced to cheap 1911 (SA mil-spec, another Charles Daly, RIA) and .22 conversion if this doesn't break the rules. Again, shooting primarily .22s you can do a ton of shooting cheap and maybe do a box or two of .45 for extra fun. Around here the Daly or RIA would go for about $450, and say $200 for a .22 kit leaves $100 for ammo. Buy one or two boxes of the bulk-pack Win White Box for ~$20ea and I can have 100 rounds of .45acp and 4000 rounds of .22 or 200 .45acp and 3000 .22lr.

Tied for Second: Another CZ 75 type gun (probably the SA or 85 Combat, maybe an EAA) and .22 conversion. Again, if the conversion wouldn't break the rules. .22 is cheap. This gun is about $400 here for the basic 75B, $200 more for the Kadet kit leaves $50 for almost 500 rounds of Win White Box 9mm and $100 for 5000 rounds of cheap .22lr ammo.

Third/Fourth place: A used S&W revolver, probably another 3". At about $300-350 this will leave over $400. At about an $8.50 average per box that is over 2300 rounds. Even better if I could use the $400 for unloaded bullets, new brass, and powder and load it myself.
