what do you carry if you are not carrying a firearm or even with a firearm?

as a civilian (who has had some legal trouble) i find this pretty good gear for my daily encounters in the city . i currently cant carry a firearm due to a scrappy legal situation . but its not permanent. will be the same setup once i get legal next year . With the addition of my Xd i forfeited to a relative .

Welcome to THR.

I am often in NPEs so taking precautions as to how I enter and exit structures is important.
So I improvise, adapt and overcome with such things as a 20oz bottle of water or soda, rolled up magazine, and when indoors pay attention to entrances, exits, hallways, heavy furniture for cover and keep my mind open to any and all options.

Good foot wear is recommended ...

I've usually got a pocket knife. I've almost always got a Mag 2AA, or sometimes a SureFire, that doubles as a handy basher.

But then, wherever I go I'm always carting around 240 lbs of Grade A American Beefcake.

Awareness is information in, Attitude is information out, between the two I don't feel the need to pack much beyond a gun and some well-fitting sneakers.

Though I have always had a soft spot for that TDI, and hope to adopt one of my own someday. I mean, just look at it! aaaaaw!

Hmm- I, unfortunately, can't carry around a pocketkknife with me all the time, as I am in High School and ZT is in place. I have a heaavy backpack that, I suppose, would hurt like hell to get hit with.
A belt, if I can pull it out in time, makes a nice hitter.
I've also got a 6'6'', 235 pound me that's with me all the time.

I like small flashlights quite a bit. A 2 AA (or even AAA, if your hand is small) light will often be useful, and in an emergency can work as a kubaton/yarawa stick for emergency SD.

I always carry my CRKT folder M16-13m. I usually also have a streamlight flashlight and a SAK. On Sundays while I am dressed in suits and need thinner profiles I carry a SOG twitch, and my SAK.
