I Need A Backpack/Slingpack

Its getting warm and I like to ride my bike to the range. I need something that will hold a pistol, few boxes of ammo, eyes, ears...etc. Any suggestions? I would prefer its not too large and would rather go with a slingpack if I can find the right one.

I have a few Maxpedition packs, and think the fatboy would be good for riding. I also have a thermite versapack that is great for hiking and walking; but it may be too much mass for riding.

I've got and use the Fatboy versipak. darned well made piece of gear. If all of their stuff is as well made it should last a life time of normal use

The versipack has enough room to pack everything for a trip to the range? I was just eyeing up the jumbo, is there a way to rig a small lock for the pistol? They are supposed to be locked during transport in CA
I dont use headphone style muffs so those wont be taking any space

I would recommend the Jumbo. You can easily fit five 50-round boxes of ammo in the main compartment and eye protection in the eyeglass case on top of the main flap. A pistol would go in the CCW pouch. I don't see a good way to lock it though.

Do you think a pistol in a locked gun rug would fit in the rear pouch?

There's a video review of the Jumbo on Maxpedition's site.

It should give you a good idea of the size. You can still go larger with the Colossus, but at that point, you may want to consider the Monsoon, which will hold a hydration bladder and makes a great riding pack. I have the Monsoon and a Remora (which I usually use for my eyes, ears, and a couple of boxes of ammo when I go to the range), and they're both great packs.

Sorry to revive a thread that's over one year stale, but I just wanted to add that that you CAN rig a jumbo versipack to lock the gun compartment closed. I use a 4" length of small chain and a small key-lock to secure the zipper to one of the webbing loops. It may not be thief-proof, but I think it'd be considered a locked container for transporting-an-evil-handgun-in-the-people's-republic-of-California purposes.
