In my book a stout cane is hard to beat as a defensive weapon (short of a gun), but it could be better. What I would like to have is essentially a cattle prod built into the body of a cane.
A stun gun with a pair of prongs activated by a micro switch that would protrude when activated through the rubber or nylon foot of the cane should be easy to design. This unit would need to retain the strength and functiunality of a quality cane. As stated earlier a cane alone is a mighty awesome weapon if a person knows how to use it so that function shouldn't be compromised.
Senior citizens, male and female, would love something like this. For younger folks who might feel conspicuous with a cane, the unit could be made to look like a sheathed umbrella. It wouldn't need to actually function as an umbrella.
Does anybody make a product similar to this? If so, I want one.

Canes rock.
Sure a "stun Gun" or "Spray" beats the actual usage of said "Cane" but what about the fact that a big stick makes people think twice, sometimes three times about being a lowly human and actually makes them want to be a citizen.

Dunno if you could get everything you want into a cane, but there is such a thing as an electrified umbrella.

aren't you trying to overthink this just a bit? You make the very valid point that the cane when properly employed can be a fearsome weapon, but then go on to wish for more capability via high tech gimmickry. The use of a simple walking cane is easy to defend in a court of law but imagine trying to defend the use of what amounts to a police riot control weapon. Complicates things a bit, yes?
Murphy's Law also states (subsection c, paragraph 2) that a flashlight is a metal tube kept in your glovebox where you store your dead batteries. I imagine the same might be true for your high tech cane.
Would your training be complicated by trying to use the tip of the cane to take advantage of the stun capability when a simple block/counterstrike move might be more effective?
Just some things to think about.

You know, a cane with an m249 in it would totally beat a regular cane.
Or a phased plasma rifle, say.. 40 watt range?
I mean, you could walk with it, and then if you see john connor......
The cane is a very simple machine that serves a very simple purpose. Call me curmudgeonly but on that count I'll go with tradition. That, plus, any time you remove material from your basher you're gonna make it weaker (this is mostly an issue with wood, but think about it.)
I think you might find that the above link is a little out of date. They are only selling the hooked ABS model now.
A really good piece of kit though all the same. I have the ball ended version.
These people have a handful of the ball ended ones left though. Click Here (http://stoppa.co.uk/acatalog/Batons.html)

A horrible idea for anything other than collecting. Nothing says "I'm really looking for an excuse to kill somebody!" these days quite like a sword cane. Unless it's your set of bo shuriken throwing spikes on your wrist gauntlet or your tabi split-toe shoes that you wear while walking the neighborhood...

Here's a link (http://www.real-self-defense.com/umbrella.html) to a tactical umbrella. I just got one of these. I wouldn't want to get hit with one but I wouldn't really like having to trust my life to it either. I'd rather trust my Blackthorn walking stick or my Cold Steel City Stick cane.
I will say I'm impressed with how tough the umbrella is. I'm going to keep it for that alone.
Ditto to JShirley's bit about sword canes. I have a hard time coming up with a worse idea.

When I lived in LA I was partial to pick handles. Like Clint sez in "Pale Rider" "there is nothing like a nice piece of hickory."
I was walking my dog one day and an insane Great Dane attacked her and had her by the throat. I was carrying an ash walking stick and after about a dozen one hand blows around the Dane's ribs he Dane released my dog and turned to move on me. Fortunately, the Dane moved off. After that I walked my dog with a pick handle. I did meet a LAPD officer crusing by and he did give me a funny look but kept on driving.
Now, if I had to start over I am thinking Boar Spear. 100,000,000 Africans cann't be wrong!

Sir, I take offense to your implying that bo shuriken throwing spikes mounted on a tactical wrist gauntlet aren't a perfectly valid weapon for self defense.
I would make the argument that they are better than a gun, for the following reason:
1. Stealthy.
2. No muzzle flash.
3. Awesome.
4. Did I say awesome? I did? Well, I mean it. Super-Awesome, even.
5. They are not subject to backround checks.
6. Cheaper than guns.
7. Who doesn't want to wear a wrist gauntlet?
8. Can also be used to pick teeth after a delicious meal.
9. Studies show that the mere presence of bo shuriken throwing spikes makes attackers flee something like 97% of the time. Those produced from a wrist gauntlet bump that average up to 99.34%.
10. I have to point it out again, they are really freaking super-awesome.
There. You, kind moderator, have been Pwned. Enjoy.

Well said, Timbo! Now, if we can only find a way to mount them to a cane (cane gauntlet? or perhaps the cane goes onto the wrist gauntlet) we will have all the advantages of a stick plus all the advantages of bo shuriken PLUS all the advantages of the stun gun we mounted in there.
JShirley, the tabi... they're comfy. I have an orthopedic condition. If I *was* a ninja, though, I'd probably have a good excuse for wearing them, like the one I have. Y'know, stealth and all.

I think they'd be better off mounted on an AR, and then one could conceal the AR in a "Hideaway Cane."

What gets me is that the cane is touted in the post title as a non-lethal weapon. Sorry folks, it just ain't so. You give some goob a good whack upside the head with a cane and you can send him to meet his maker just as fast as if you shot him. Canes do blunt force trauma, and blunt force trauma has been used with deadly results ever since australopithecus, and most likely before that. More people have been killed with clubs over the millennia than have ever been killed with firearms.
If you are going to defend yourself with a cane, don't make the mistake that you are somehow using a more humane, less damaging weapon. That kind of thinking can cause you to hit light, and get you dead if your life depends on it. In a life or death situation you do what you have to do to make sure you are the one still alive when it's all over.
That being said, and to get this back onto a serious track, also remember that in many jurisdictions walking stick swords are illegal. Best to take a good Japanese style sword class and use a good stout walking stick made of oak, hickory, or other suitable hardwood. I have a real blackthorn shilealea cut on the banks of the river Boyne within a stones throw of the New Grange Mound.
Sorry, I just couldn't resist giving the pedigree of my big stick.:neener:

I hate to bring this up, but in a court/legal situation a jury (that leans to the left) will hang you for having a new metal filling in your tooth. "It was to be used as a projectile when the defendant bit the poor innocent 'bystander' as he attempted to remove her purse and his knife accidently lodged in her back. The dentist was the accomplist in the matter. We are sueing him/her as well!"
This might seem absurd, and I guess it is. If you read the may articles about police (and civi's, for that matter) and the obscene things that they are convicted of in the line of duty - or the innocent couple walking and one of them hums a rock at a gangbanger ater being attacked- and what happens to these people in court, - I now pay less attention to the aftermath of an encounter with a "bad guy" and more attention to my life. The legal system is really upside down.
Did you know that large kitchen knives are now illegal in Britian (or so I heard)?
One item I wish the masters of ingenuity would invent is a collapsable baton, an OC spray in the handle and a rather frightening dual prong stun gun on the "wacking" end. Tall order. Bet is could be effective, though - until it went to court!
Sorry, the need to vent was there. Never been to court. Never want to. Scared I'd be hung for having 32 year old pins in my hip as concealed weapons.:)

Had a thought - probably a bad one.
Could you take a cane sword, cut the blade off, spring load the shaft with a rather stout spring and base and load the thing with a sabot round of flechetts?!
Yep, off to Sing Sing I go. Would disuade an attack.

I've carried a heavy, hooked oak cane on every commercial airflight (dozens) I've taken since 9/11. "Luckily", I have some pretty serious surgical scars on my ankle from an accident w-a-y back in college (30 years ago) so anyone who asks (they haven't) can have a look & verify that I may have a legitimate need.
My cane doesn't need a sword inside or a electrical shock device installed. I don't want the legal highlights should I need to USE it. Do a websearch for "Combat Canes" & you'll find some interesting info. Find a local (qualified) martial arts instructor & study some stick-fighting techniques...then forget that silly sword-cane notion.
