State Rep. Mike Pitts filed the bill to help out a national gun wholesaler located in Lexington County where employees younger than 21 were filling gun orders over the phone -- something state Attorney General Henry McMaster said was not allowed because of their age.

"That would have meant half those employees couldn't work," the Laurens Republican said Friday.

The way I heard it told, it makes it legal for someone to buy a handgun through an individual at 18, where it was 21 before.

Simply changed the word "twenty-one" to "eighteen" in 16-23-30(A)(3) (http://www.scstatehouse.net/sess117_2007-2008/bills/4364.htm).

Signed into law by Gov. Sanford this week.

So what does this mean?

Sale of handguns, prohibitions

"(A) It is unlawful for a person to knowingly sell, offer to sell, deliver, lease, rent, barter, exchange, or transport for sale into this State any handgun to:
SNIP
(3) a person under the age of eighteen, but this shall not apply to the issue of handguns to members of the Armed Forces of the United States, active or reserve, National Guard, State Militia, or R. O. T. C., when on duty or training or the temporary loan of handguns for instructions under the immediate supervision of a parent or adult instructor;

So, does that mean I (19 y/o Active Duty Army) can purchase a handgun in South Carolina from a FFL legally now, instead of having to have it gifted to me? Or am I totally reading this wrong?

I thought there was a federal law that made the age to purchase a handgun from a dealer be 21.

Yes, SC law now allows an 18 year old to purchase a handgun. The law went into effect Wednsday. How it relates to Federal Law, I have no idea.

It is probably 18 to buy from a private party (non FFL). I am pretty sure 21 is still the federal age to buy from a dealer.

EDIT: Of course I am referring to handguns.

18 year olds can now own handguns.
They still can not buy them from a FFL dealer, they can buy themfrom an individual.
