hi guys; new kid in the building. i have a 5903 bought 2nd hand in the original box serial numbered to the gun. question is: the product code on the box 104010 is alluded to in jim supica's book as being connected to the georgia highway patrol, page 172 i think. does anyone know what that means,ie., is it a patrol pistol or what? please help if you can. thanks ,proudrace

Greeting's proudrace and a big ole' hearty welcome to THR-

Pull up a chair and join us for a morning cup of coffee; or
if you prefer, a cold glass of iced tea!:D

Now, to try to answer your question. I believe that the
Smith & Wesson 5903 was orginally ordered by the
Georgia State Patrol; but the book is not definitive in
the exact quanity ordered? The 5903 could very well
have been submitted by S&W for test and evaluation
by this department. Interestingly, the book does denote
a first trigger guard variation; which indicates a
change later in production.

The product code you mentioned is for the 4" barrel
model 5903; but they made a run of 3.5" barrel models
designated the 5903-SSV and a 5903 TSW. Which do
you actually have?

Hey proudrace-

The only way to tell for sure would be to write Mr. Roy
Jinks, the offical Smith & Wesson historian; and
I'm sure he could tell you by your weapons s/n if it
was shipped to the Georgia State Patrol.
