I picked up a new Marlin 336W in 30/30 win yesterday. It came with a sling and plain old iron sights. Shoots straight and I love it, but i am thinking about getting a few items to make it a bit better. These include: a soft case for travel/storage, apeture sights, and a better sling probably should go ahead and pick up a leather one. Does anyone know where the best place to start looking for these? I found the apeture sights (XS type) for 66 before shipping so that may just be the best deal on that. Thanks!

You might also want a shell carrier that slips or laces onto the buttstock.

I put a Williams Receiver sight on my 336 and found it made my groups shrink 50% or so. Much easier to center the front blade in the aperture.

I just bought a 336 for my son. I ordered a Brockman rear peep sight, and a scout rail.

I'll be adding a scout scope with tip off rings and a spring kit. Kid size synthetic stock and it should be done.

The XS Sight systems ghost ring set and scout scope rail is a worthy addition to the 336.

A buttstock carrier for extra rounds and a thinly padded cheekpiece helps me a lot (I slipped a mousepad under my cartridge carrier- works for me). An inexpensive, decent sling.

Can't really add much more than that, other than substituting a Williams FoolProof sight set for the XS system.

Oh, and XS is going to be bring out a tri-rail handguard to replace the forward handguard later this year...

I have read about the xs front sight not working with new 336's. It has to do with the lack of an additional screw to mount the front sight. Does Williams have the same issue?

If your XS front sight is the wrong type just call XS and they will send you the right one. I think they will also ask you to send yours back to them. You could also install a Millet front sight post in your existing front sight ramp. These are available from Brownells and other retailers, and you can choose an orange or white rear edge for visibility.

You might also check into Skinner sights -- many people seem to like them.

Thanks Z_Infidel, the skinner sights are really appealing actually. I am going to write him soon and ask a few questions before making a purchase.

On a separate note I spoke with a local gunshop yesterday about apeture sights for the 336. He said that he wouldn't recommend them, something about shooting at dawn/dusk and not being able to see. Now my experience with apeture sights are only an old BB gun and the m16 or m4 (depending on the unit) that i'm currently issued. I have never had an issue shooting in low light conditions or broad daylight. Starting to questions why he didn't want to recommend them. I do like apeture sights. With the standard buckhorn sights I have now, i pretty much cover the center of the tgt at 50 meters, so its a bit difficult to aim. That said, i had two groups at 2 inches right out of the box with the cheapest ammo walmart had to sell. Could I expect much better out of peep sights?
