You can get 2 kinds of permits in NJ.
A Firearms ID card to buy as many long guns as you want (as of '97 anyway)
And a Pistol Permit. 1 pistol per permit.

Is that per year, per lifetime, what? How many pistol permits per what amount of time?

NYC is much worse, maybe 1 out of a hundred applicants, who thought they were even qualified, actually are.

Here's praying Heller opens the way to strike down such feudal laws. If DC's total ban on handguns is found unreasonable, declaring one-gun-per-permit laws unreasonable is the next step.

Move to a free country. We have our problems here, but infringement of 2A isn't one of 'em.
Stay safe.

Legally, you can apply for as many permits as you want, but you need one per handgun purchase. Some municipalities will limit how many they will issue per application (ie, mine says 2), but AFAIK, there's no law that allows them to do so. Each permit is good for 90 days, and can be extended once.
To the OP - time to apply for more!

I'm concerned about the whole "reasonable restrictions" argument that some people are using since Chief Justice John Roberts made that comment.
I think we're going down the wrong path there. Especially for people like me who live in relatively free states with few restrictions.
It opens the door up for many "reasonable restrictions".
We need to stick to the, "What part of shall not be infringed don't you understand?" and we'll be a lot better off.

I ♥ Indiana.
Indiana Constitution, Section 32: "The people shall have a right to bear arms, for the defense of themselves and the State."
The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence gave Indiana only 8 points out of 100 on its 2007 Annual Scorecard.
My lifetime personal protection permit just came in the mail today.
By God, I ♥ Indiana. (I just wish it were a little warmer, and a little closer to a beach...)
