I picked up an older model Mossberg 500 the other day. It has wood furniture, checkered grip area and forearm. The receiver is etched and the blueing was nice and shiny, under the dust and surface rust. Came with a 30" full choke fixed barrel.

Gun had apparently been used a small bit back in the day, maybe early 70's, and then had set somewhere, forgotten. The action was all gummed up and the barrel just would not come clean. I scrubbed it 4 times with Hoppes #9 and a brass bore bursh, but there was still some sort of residue in there. Not rust since there was no oxidation on patches.

So, I sprayed down the action and the inside of the barrel with CLP and let that baby sit overnight. Then tonight I went up, took out a new Hoppes Tornado Bore brush and pushed it through.... I got a pile of pebbles on the rag at the other end of the barrel..... another pull, then a push and another pile of gray, scrabbles... like eraser leftovers. Two more swipes and no more garbage. I swapped it out a few times with a bore mop and then some patches. The bore is now mirror bright and no evidence of residue.

Action came total clean also.

CLP also clean the 18.5 inch cyl barrel I picked up today, one that was a leftover from a police purchase and had been sitting in storage for years. It had some surface rust that came right off with a pantyhose and CLP treetment.

I also cured cancer with it today and tomorrow I am going to tackle Global Warming.

It is the best cheap investment there is for gun maintenance.

CLP is some good stuff. I use it and Hoppes #9. The Hoppes is good for lead and copper build up. The CLP is for everything else.

I hear so many folks on the forums badmouth CLP but I have had great results for years with it. It really does clean and lube and preserve. For really hard carbon deposits like cylinder faces they also make a bore cleaner that will cut that crud. I've never had a carry gun rust with CLP and I have sweated on them in the summer. Good stuff. Don't forget to shake it up good.

Sounds like you have had some plastic build up in that barrel. Plastic can be some tuff stuff to clean out. I used to clean my shotgun right after I got home from shooting, but I found just what you did... Spray it with CLP and let it sit overnight. The next day the plastic will be curled up and come out easily with not nearly as much effort and cussing. My religion has been better since discovering CLP :)

Every cleaning kit should include:
Breakfree
Rem-Oil
Sweets 7.62
Tetra Grease

There's not much you can't do with those 4 simple fluids.

I have been using CLP since 1985 when I went into the military. And have used it on every firearm I have owned since then. We use it at work also. We clean Glocks, S&W revolvers, Rem 870's, AR-15's and even Ruger mini-14's with it.

for copper I have KG12, but I dont get much copper fouling in my handguns and am just holding on to it for when I do finally find the garand I want.

It had some surface rust that came right off with a pantyhose and CLP treetment.

I tried that, but I find the pantyhose are just too uncomfortable while sitting for a long time cleaning the gun.:neener:

CLP also works well as removing thermal grease used on computer cpu chips and heatsinks :)

Thing is, a new Tornado bore brush would have done the same thing without the CLP.

Them baby's will take the paint off a rusty stove pipe when nothing else will touch it!

Plastic wad residue & leading don't even stand a chance.

I marinate most of my firearms in CLP and then cover them with a silicon sock of some sort.

I love my CLP spray cans.

If only EdsRed came in a spraycan. I put a tiny bit of the acetone version in a "chemical/Solvent rated" spray bottle once. Squirted twice then melted :)

I love CLP. I use Sweets 7.62 for copper (potent stuff...have to crack a few windows), and CLP for everything else.
