Okay, I'm not doing well on search but I know I've seen comment on this before. What is the background on the FN 5.7 "cop killer" stuff?

I looked into the same thing and was told that the steel core stuff is not legal for civies to own. The standard lead core is all we can buy legally.

I'm unclear on whether it is of a composition that would actually be illegal to sell, but it sure as hell would be politically inexpedient.
The over-the-counter stuff is the aluminum or polymer cored training round IIRC.

Currently available to us civvies are the SS197SR w/40gr lead-core Hornady V-Max bullet and the SS195LF w/28gr aluminum-core bullet.

Actually, I was curious as to what the entire issue is about. I just ran into another site that gave me the info I was looking for.
Not ready to abandon revolvers yet.

issue is that a gun runner for a drug cartel got caught with alot weapons, including the Five-seveN. the Mexican Police called them (Five-seveN) "cop killers"
the SS190 round is the one that can penetrate i think anything less than Level III armor

IMHO, if they found real SS190 with the weapon that would indicate it was stolen or sold from a police armory.

The FN release on the different loads was interesting, because it basically said that police should never use certain rounds for duty (all the civilian loads) because they are so under-performing and far from the original performance levels, and they said a couple of the civilian loads should not even be used for practice because they are so underloaded they will not impact anywhere near the ordinary load.
I'll go look for a link now

I kinda wonder about the Mexican Cops calling the gun a "cop killer".
Half the Federales and Policia there are completely corrupt and the other half turn into toll booth operators when they see a Gringo, Why would they be concerened about a deadly handgun? Wouldn't they be more concerened about the illegal AKs and other real assault rifles they have down there?
Seems to me some antis just looking for proof that the 5.7 is evil, or the Mexican government is looking for a similar deal to Columbia where we fund their constant war on evil drug lords that never seem to get arrested.
And the only reason this is an issue is because FN designed the 5.7 to be a miniature 5.56 and capable of penetrating military armor out to certain range( 200yrds?) with the right ammo. with the wrong ammo it would be a long range high powered .22 magnum and not much more. Sounds scary, I know;)
