Well i have ordered myself a benelli nova. so now it's time to start trying to figure out what to buy next (around Christmas). I want a rifle that is accurate from 300-500 yards. this will just be a target rifle since we can't hunt with rifles here in ohio. and it will be awhile till i can venture out of state to hunt. i want a .30-30 but the rounds are expensive just for plinking. so i was thinking a .223 because the rounds are cheap, but the guns are a lot more than any .30-30 lever action would be. I would really like a tactical looking .223 rifle, but don't want to spend more than $500-$600. can this be done? help what should i do.

Moving this thread to Rifles forum, where you're more likely to get specialized advice.

Savage Tacticals are in that range, aren't they guys? You could find one of those in .223 I bet.
Another option (what I'd prolly do in your place) is to hunt around for a Rem 700 short action in .223, and just build it up over time into a high end "tactical" rig.

hmm where to start... ok well if your stuck on the 223 then look into a CZ 527, or one of the .223's savage has to offer, or maybe a remington 700 adl, they're all good guns the im sorta bias to the remington. If you want something a little less accurate at 300-500 yards but more fun to plink with then look into a ruger mini-14 those provide a lot of plinkin excitment. If it doesnt have to be a 223 then go ahead and treat yourself to a 30-06, the ammo is a bit more expensive but you can get sellier and bellot 180 grain ammo for about 11 bucks a box, surplus ammo is less expensive but you sacrafice accuracy. if your shooting at 300-500 yards then your gonna want to get a scope, i'd reccomend no more than a 3-9 power. if you can afford it get a leupold vx-I or vx-II greatest scope you'll ever look through and they have the "no questions asked" lifetime warranty. the VX-I's will run about 220. but some people swear on those simmons AETEC's. its just about what you like, dont let people infulence you on scopes get whats good for you, im not taking back what i said about the leupolds they besides the unquestionable quality they have the warranty thats second to none. good luck on your purchase. any further questions?

If you want accuracy out to 500 yards then the .30-30 is not the right choice. .223, .30-06, .308, .338 - there are many choices for long distance accuracy. .30-30 is more of a brush gun. I know there are some that can do it, but I can't hit anything past 150 yards with my .30-30. Not true with an AR or bolt gun.

rem 700 vls. can be had new for under $600... used even better than that.
cans of krylon in the camo colors of your choice, or just black... about $3 each.
there ya go! tactical looking target rifle. to go.
30-30 is a bad choice for target shooting... just not a enough oompf to get the job done once you start looking beyond 200 yards.

...nor am I a real expert on rifles. However, I just bought a Savage 10fp-le2 in 308 with
a 26" barrel for about $550 and it came with a choate stock. I can't imagine a rifle
looking much more tactical than that.

The scope, bipod, etc were not included in the $550, but the stock was.
I have only taken it to the range once so far, but if what I saw @ 100 yards is any
indication, I expect 300-500 is within this rig's reach.
I cannot speak to the 223 though. Others more experienced than I should be able to
guide you.
