...no, not the one you'd see on a stove or oven.
bear with me.
i'm keen on practicing timed drills (malfunction and reload drills are one example) at the pistol and rifle range.
usually i practice solo and don't have a buddy to time me.
is there a self-operated timer geared for shooting that one can initiate, say with one's foot?
thx.

I've never seen one operated by foot, but that's not necessary with the timers I've seen. They all have a delay function, which means the start signal won't go off until between 2 and 4 seconds after you hit the button. My timer is a PACT but all of the typical makers I've seen have this delay function.

I've used several different brands as an RO for IPSC and Single Action Shooting events. I have a timer that about 10 years old, so the technology has no doubt improved and I don't know what's out there. When I was actively competing, I did a lot of time practice. Most timers then and I assume now have a random delay function, so you can initiate the sequence, set the timer on the ground or shooting bench, and wait for the beep. When finished shooting, you can review "splits," the time between shots. So if you shoot a few shots, reload and shoot a fewmore, you get the time betwen each shot, including the time for your reload.

I've used the PACTs quite extensively and can recommend them. Loud, easy to setup and read, they helped my IDPA game immensely.

I have a "random timer" program for my laptop somewhere around here. It basically turns your laptop into a timer (but the laptop needs to have a microphone built in). Stopped using it because my old laptop's wimpy speakers were too weak when I had double ear protection on.
If I can find the software again I'll post a link.

Clip it onto my belt or pocket, set it to "delay", and hit the button. Works fine.

In addition to the random start most timers offer, high end Pacts offer both a cadence function and a programmable interval timer. Excellent for improving 'pace', reloads, correcting mal-functions and similar.
