Refinishing over rust

I had a 1911 with some rust on the beavertail which I had refinished with Birdsong's black-t. I expected the rust to be buffed off before refinishing, but instead it apears they simply did their usual process and refinished over the rust.

I had a similar experience with rust on a S&W M60 that got sent to Mahovsky's Metalife.

Do you think these finishes over the rust will prohibit the rust spreading? Or is there still a concern that the rust can "eat through"?

I imagine they bead or abrasive blasted the part before applying the finish. The blasting should have removed all the rust and what you are seeing is a pitted area caused by the rust. I believe you need to pay extra for the metal prep to completely remove such blemishes.

Have you spoken to either Birdsong or Mahovsky about your dissatisfaction? If so, what did they say?

Well...they're refinishes were top notch, I wasn't charged extra for any special attention areas. I told them about the rust and was told "don't worry about it."

My concern is that the rust may still be active or able to spread underneath the refinish.
