Hi! Sorry for the quite odd title of this thread:) The thing is that i'm trying to get a list of american official "duty" revolvers, Colt's and S&W's from 1920-1990.
My quess is that there's a big bunch of them but any help would be appreciated. I'm not looking to make a complete list just a list of classic police and military revolvers between 1920-1990 like the S&W M10 and Colt official police, colt detective and so on. Or maby....If u would have to list the 20 most important revolvers, which would them be? Please incl the barrel lenght if possible. Thanks alot /Niklas

I'm not sure if it was "official issue" but some agencies allowed Colt Pythons. I know of at least one local city officer from the late 1970's who carried a 6" Python. Other agencies allowed the S&W models 27 and 28. The LAPD issued S&W model 14's and 15's in the 60's and 70's.

The S&W Model 15 with a 4" barrel was the duty carry for USAF Security Police for many years. I carried one on a daily basis for 8.

Virtually every American made double action revolver of a caliber over .32 was "officially issued" by some department or agency.

Basically look at a listing of revolvers made by Colt, S&W, and Ruger and each center fire model was used by the police at one time or another.

This has "Pittsburgh Police" stamped on the backstrap circa 1977 or so.

I took the original wood grips off(chipped and faded) and replaced with the much more comfortable Hogue monogrips.

Certainly, one of the best has too be the Smith & Wesson model 19/66.
Built on S&W's K-frame for the weight factor of toteing it in a duty rig
all day; many police officers. deputy sheriffs, constables, and the like
were glad to see this baby born~! :scrutiny: ;) :D

There was a gradual shift to more powerful cartridges over that span, from .32 SW Long and .38 SW to .38 Special, 38 Special +p+ and finally the .357 Mag by the 1970's before the advent of the wondernines. There were a wide array of models from Colt Official Police, Smith K frames, Ruger Six's and the like. Probably several hundred just in the major departments alone. The main theme was they were six shot wheelguns, US made.
