and a bit of humility.
A couple friends and I have decided to take up trap, since there's a local range and I haven't been finding too many grouse to shoot at.
They bought BT99s, and I've been trying to figure out what to shoot. First session was with my old M12 with trap barrel assembly.
Pitiful.
Then I tried using my Browning Liege O/U with a monte carlo stock and IM/F barrels.
Same results, only a bit worse. People are looking at me in sympathy thinking I'm some kind of special needs person with the make-a-wish foundation.
"Hey look, I think that guy's blind"
Using my buddy's BT99 resulted in a bit of better luck, but still embarassing. The guy running the place and tried helping but couldn't quite figure out what I was doing wrong. Mumbled something about I must really enjoy being out here.
This week I ordered a highrib, fairly long LOP M12 with a Fajen rollover comb from Jaquas. Shot good the first time, felt great in my hands but bolt was hanging. Bad headspace. :what: Sent it back.
Looked at an SKB, a new BT99, some more M12s and had a lead on a NIB 870TB and a Perazzi TM-1. Went to look at them, neither panned out and in desperation to have something to shoot this weekend bought an 1100 Trap. Early 70s manufacture, monte carlo stock, high gloss finish. Fits well, patterned fairly high (45/55). Hardly used. Oh well, it will get me through this weekend and maybe I can use it as trade bait later.
Did I mention I'm a gun snob and hate Remingtons? Too heavy and cludgy, Browning and Winchester are far superior.
Guy brought me another BT to try out today, but decided I'd try the gun i already owned first to see what happened.
I doubled last weeks score, shot my first 25 straight on 16 yard line and had the 2nd best handicap score today with an 86 (when I left, the 27 yarders were still shooting). This is my 4th outing at registered ATA trap. :D :neener: :p as well as saving myself the $2000 I was getting ready to spend. My buddies were in awe and we figured out I should probably keep shooting this one until I can't shoot it no more.
With the $11 Birchwood Casey shell catcher, this thing is a hoot to shoot and is actually less work than an o/u. Throw it in, hit release, shoot, grab shell, throw in bucket. The original White Line recoil pad has turned into a hockey puck from age, but it hardly matters since recoil is nil.
Did I mention old 1100s are overweight and clunky and I prefer Brownings and Winchesters?
