Mossberg Model 183?

I recently bought a .410 shotgun for my wife. It's a bolt-action Mossberg, model 183...

I figured it would be a good way to introduce her to shotgunning. She didn't care much for the Remington 870 in 20ga that we also have...

I also thought that it would be good for use on varmints at close range...

It seems like an interesting little gun, and I'd like to learn more. Does anyone know anything about them? What years were they made? This thing seems to be pretty old, I'd guess about 50 years? Also, is there any advantage to having a bolt action in a shotgun? I've only ever seen a handful of bolt action shotguns...

I'm also looking for chokes for it. It has a threaded barrel and it came with a choke marked "410M", I assume it's a modified choke? I'd like to obtain additional chokes if I can find any... but I'm not sure where to look.

Thanks in advance

My Grandpa gave me a 183 D-D. With the "M" choke on it the pattern spreads out pretty quick. With the choke off, it is quite accurite with slugs.

I found some information here:

I would also like to know where to get other chokes.

My most treasured firearm is a 183-d.

Thanks for the link Gingerbreadman

Went down to Sportsman's Warehouse the other day and we bought some goodies for it. Got a Bore-Snake, a carry-case, and a nifty slip-on recoil pad that also has a shell holder on it, fit's 7 rounds of .410

Still hoping to find chokes. I had seen them listed on the gun parts corporation web page, but they were "out of stock". Figures...

I'd like one if I find one cheap. Ash, is it a gun withsentimental value? Not many seem to like bolt action shotguns. I have a 12ga one I like.

Here's a great link to some of the older Mossberg shotgun info:

Try these folks for info and parts www.havlinsales.com

Vic and Cheryl are good folks. Besides selling mossberg stuff, they also run the mossberg collectors association. They are very good at answering phone calls and emails. Also very quick to ship things you buy from them.

Looks like they've got some 183 parts in stock too. Magazines, chokes, stocks, extractors.

Probably wouldn't be a bad idea to stock up :D.

I have the 20guage version. I found the two chokes I needed on ebay.
As mentioned above, Havlin sales is a good place for chokes and magazines.
