Was buying at Academy some of favouite 9mm ammo for plinking (Monarch - and the price jumped a buck in 2 weeks :eek:) when I was eyeing the rifle displays . I was thinking of picking up a .243 for hogs eventually.

Well, they didn't have any in that calibre, but the clerk showed me a nice .270. It was a Weatherby Vanguard in standard .270 for $ 569. Boy was it nice - fit /finish/woood and the bolt action were excellent.

I also thought Weatherby tended to high end rifles...is this a fair price for it? I always thought they tended to be a bit more expensive.

If so, the .270 is a pretty versatile calibre - I might just pick it up.

In my area, Wal-Mart has some out of production Remington 700 adl's in .270, 7mag, 30'06 for $325. I almost bought one on principle, but couldn't justify it.

The shootist, I am a BIG fan of the .270, I would say, get one (if budget, wife, etc. allow)! The Weatherby seems to be a great little shooter. My uncle has the Mark V, and I was impressed by the fit and finish. In regards to the 700, if it is the gray-synthetic-stocked rifle (the 710), I would say stay away from it. I have heard reports of the gun firing unintentionally. I was curious one day, at wal-mart, and asked to see one. I extracted the bolt, and was horrified about the amount of play in it! My $100 savage MKII has A LOT less play, to give you an idea. This immediately drew me closer to the Mossberg 100 ATR in .270 Win. My dad bought it, for $300 in camo, and he loves it! I have heard GREAT things about the 100 ATR. Just my 2 coppers.

NOTHING wrong with the bolt in the Weatherby I looked at. The Vanguard bolt was slick, no play to it and smooth.

I figure the calibre is versatile enough for hogs, for deer at longer ranges, heck, might even handle the swamp monsters I hear about dwelling in the LA or E Tx Bayous :evil:
