I'm sure this is an idiotic question: How do you use a quote from a previous post in a thread, how do you highlight the quote in your posting. I cant find the "quote" button. Thanks.

It works like the Bold, Italics, and Underline buttons:

Click the speech bubble right near where you're typing (right in the middle above that first line where you're writing) and you get a beginning and end tag. Put the text you want in the middle.

Alternatively, you could put the tags there yourself, like so:
<quote>TEXT</quote>
Just replace the <> with []

The very first sticky in this sub-forum, called "How do I quote other posts in my posts?," covers it pretty well.

It will look like this when you're writing:
This is some text I want to quote.

It will display like this when you post:
This is some text I want to quote.
