Well, trying to kill 2 birds with one stone here. What do you think about a .357 lever for 100 yard varmint hunting with open sights? Thanks, Jeff

What is the other bird you are trying to kill? It will certainly kill varmints, but there are better choices depending on your quarry. Could you be more specific? Rabbits, prairie dogs, coyotes, etc.

I love my Marlin .357 carbine, but at 100 yards with open sights I could not hit anything smaller than Africa.

rock chucks mostly. The "other bird" is that I want a .357 lever and a varmint gun besides my 10/22.

My sentiments exactly...though I could probably hit something the size of Newfoundland...on a good day.

A .223 or .243 would be better, but with a scope, it'd work. With the stock sights, forget about it.

JHP over a max load of H110 would just about vaporize any rodent at 100 yards.

Should be around ~2300 fps, if internet lore is to be believed.

The gun is certainly accurate enough for the job.

Are YOU?

With the stock sights, I'm not. Peeps are next for my 1894C. Scoping it seems just kinda wrong... it's a short range gun.

With my Marlin 1894C I'm not beyond shooting at coyote at 100 yards with the stock sights, though I prefer a red dot sight, even for coyote at that range. With the mild recoil of the 1894C, a cheap red dot ought mnot be beyond anyone that can afford the 1894C ... it is not all that expensive.

I'm going to wish both of us good luck. I'm trying my lever action 38/357 Marlin for the first time on groundhogs. I've shot many with the usual scoped varmint calibers: 17, 22, 223 and 243, from 25 yards to 250 yards away. Those rifles are all gone so my lever action is next. Mine is sighted in out to 50 yards with a FO front and ghost ring rear. So, I will not push the distance too far past 50-75 yards for accuracy purposes.

Get a nice receiver sight and a good adjustable peep with a nice small gold bead front sight you will be good to go. I have a Marbles tang rear sight, a Merit adjustable peep and a Williams gold bead up front and it is real good for Ground hogs out to 100 yds.

I got my pictire in the Varmint Hunters Digest once holding an 1894 Marlin 357 with 2 or 3 groundhogs that were very dead. I liked 125 or 140 Hornady XTP bullets. Sometimes had to sift the remains to find any fingerprints!! Worked quite well at close range.

i agree the gun is accurite enuff but the bead would probly cover the whole varmit at 100yds. i have the 1894 in 44mag, i added a simmons 2.5x20 shotgun scope on rings as low as she'll go. im very happy with this setup. Dennis
