I'm going to start reloading for my AR soon, and was wondering what the cleanest-burning powder is that you guys use for .223?

I used to load H-335 for my .223 rounds. I changed recently to AA2230 and found it to be much cleaner. Only have two to compare but AA2230 is now my choice. Also about $20 cheaper per 8# keg.

I use Varget seems to be pretty clean to me.

H335 is a bit dirty if loaded light. At near max loading (25.3 per Hodgdon) it runs noticeably cleaner. It's my preferred powder for .223.

Ramshot TAC is the cleanest powder I've run, but in just basic test loads I had trouble getting it to group. I stopped testing due to H335 working just fine with very little fooling around.

W748 and BLC2 are near identical powders and both on the dirty side. Good performers though.

I use a lot of IMR 4895 and H335.

I really haven't paid attention to how dirty one is in relation to the other. It all seems the same to me when I clean. Perhaps I ought to shoot 10 rounds with one powder, check, and clean. Then I would repeat with the other.

I am kind of interested, though I won't change what I use b/c I like the accuracy I get.

25.2gr of Varget here...

Varget is clean, h335 is clean. The cleanest I have found though is VV N-133. Hodgdon Benchmark is very clean but I never got very good accuracy results with it. I shot 100 rounds with VV n-133 and you could not even tell I had shot it at all.

I like Reloader 7 and Varget, not sure which is cleaner as neither seem too dirty.

Shoot some wolf and then anything seems clean burning. :)

I've always felt like H335 and Varget were pretty clean, but my experience is limited.

25 of Varget.

I've had no cleanliness or accuracy complaints with 748 and 52 grain bullets, IMR 4895 and 69's, and RL15 with 80's.

Varget was not dirty for me, I just could not get it to shoot well for me.

Tough to beat H322 for both accuracy and a good, clean burn. My .223 loads favor Remington primers.

I favor IMR 4895 for .223 and .308 (or 5.56 and 7.62 for military chambers).

I like 24.5 grains of H4895 with a 55 grain Vmax. Shoots better than I can.

RL15 is fairly clean, especially compared to Varget.

Many High Power shooters prefer Vihtavuori powder because it is cleaner than all other powders. N140 is the most common. N540 is also applicable.

Benchmark is the cleanest I`ve used. Varget is very close. W748 was the worst.

+1 for varget at 25.5g with BTHP and 26 with Vmax

Profesionals over here. VihtaVuori N-133 for lighter bullets and N-140 haevyer ones. N-530 and N-540 are expencive, I use them.

Cleanest? N-140

But I have no issues with Varget, Benchmark, H335, TAC, W748, H322, or BLC(2) either.

None has impacted function. With all I clean afterwards.
