First order of business for a new shotgunner is to determine the dominant eye- likely you'll do better shooting on that side. The basic test is described at http://www.nidek.com/dominant.html and various other places.

Get familair with the gun by studying the owners manual first. Be sure to learn and ALWAYS practice the Four Rules- http://thehighroad.org/library/safetyrules.html .

Start off with the lightest field/birdshot loads you can find. Some target loads available now have only 7/8 ounce of shot. The lower the shot charge and the lower the velocity/powder charge, the lighter the recoil is likely to be.

There are a variety of reduced recoil buckshot and slug loads available that don't recoil much more than light birdshot loads. You might want to consider those as well.

One of the more critical issues with a new shotgun shooter is gun fit. You'll want to be sure the gun fits properly, especially for your wife. Many shotgun stocks are too long from the factory for most shooters and need to be shortened to fit properly. You'll need the help of an experienced shotgunner or gunsmith to determine how well your gun fits and what adjustments if any are needed.

A premium recoil pad can make a lot of difference in felt recoil too, and is a worthwhile investment. KickEez, Limbsaver, Remington R3, etc are premium pads.

See Dave McC's '101' threads at http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=2766 . There's lots of useful info there.

NRA cerified instructors teach basic shotgun classes in many areas- go to http://www.nrahq.org/education/training/basictraining.asp for more info.

Stay Safe,

Let me know how you like it. Googling has turned up sparse and mixed reviews.

buddy of mine has one, I have the maverick 88. The maverick is not as nice looking but runs better, in my opinion. Neither have really given us problems, but I do remember his choking a few times at the range. Its not a bad gun though, especially for the price.
