Looks like an A1 lower or 653 carbine lower M16 upper the first ones with no forward assist and an M4A1 barrel assy with a RAS so I would say an M16,653,4A1 "Big Time Hybrid"put together with whatever serviceable parts because we need carbines rifle.:banghead:

Clues: It has a name. It IS a frankenstein gun, but made to a specification. It's NOT Canadian, eh. Nobody's gotten close yet.

Nope. I don't consider this a trick question. It's just that you have to do a little digging to find out what it is.

looks like a standard USAF M16 that has been "upgraded" with a M4 barrel. when i was active duty i carried and orginal m16 slickside up till around 93 when we finally got A2's (FN's BTW).
when we worked certain areas or our atv patrols we would draw xm177's.

I'm pretty sure it's Israeli. They've converted some original M16s to M4 configs.

Is that that Knight Armament AR-47 that takes both AR and AK magazines or something to that effect. As you can see my knowledge is vast on this particular gun:rolleyes: so I will shut up before my stupidity overwhelms all of us.

Wow... I thought some zoomie would have gotten it by now. Wait, there's a clue.
buzz_knox
August 13, 2003, 12:47 PM
Hmm. Zoomie refers to a member of the Air Force, which adopted the AR-15 originally for security forces. So, it's an original AR-15 (pre M-16) converted to M4 config.

August 13, 2003, 12:53 PM
OK, its not a Philipino Armalite cause the operator is in desert camo
so the gun is in Iraq or Afghanistan
the lack of wear on the OD gear would point to Iraq
The SOPMOD M4 is based on the A3 detachable handled upper
and this one has an A1
the lower has a raised mag fence but i don't see three way selector labeling
there is an Olde School Stoyaway grip with the hinged door
and the telestock looks like a well worn aluminum tubed one
the newest thing on the gun is the Knights RAS front end with the tactical top sling interface
the AR-47 has a steeper rake to the mag well and is a 2003 product
this baby has been around the block

It's a GAU somethingorother. the PJ's use them. The israelis also use car-15s with m4 barrels, though.

In the last several years, my Air Force M16 qualifications included a gun assembled from a slick (No forward assist, no brass deflector, windage-only rear sight) upper mounted on an early government-contract Colt Safe/Semi/Auto AR-15 lower, with a new replacement HBAR/round handguard barrel and front sight assembly.
The following year, it was that same early Colt AR-15 lower, now with a FN-supplied Safe/Semi/Burst trigger group, and FN M16A2 upper. Turns out there was a big contract given to FN to bring these early Colts closer to more current guns.
So it doesn't surprise me to see that slick-upper M-4, it was probably field-expedient. ;)

15 hours and the natives are already restless... Alright, it's a GAU somethingorother like Andrew said, but the exact designation of GAU-?????? hasn't been mentioned. While it's essentially a rebuild, it is indeed built to specification. It took me a little research to find out. Any PJ's or Combat controllers out there?

GAU-5/A/A
was this purpose built to match the Stargate SG-1 rifle?
Badger Arms
August 13, 2003, 07:06 PM
No, but IIRC, the GAU-5A/A rifles all have the suppressors removed and replaced with M-16 style birdcage suppressors. That's a picture of a XM177 or perhaps a GAU-5/A prior to the conversion. Not quite the same thing. All the GAU-5's I've seen have had the 11.5" barrel with the birdcage Flash Suppressors. This makes it an A/A model whereas the shorter 10.5" is simply a single "A." But the gun the PJ is carrying in the photo is not the "A" model or the "A/A" model

Shamelessly stolen from a posting by Dan Watters:
The USAF’s GAU-5 series started with the original XM177, and consists of four variants differing primarily in barrel length. The models are the GAU-5A, GAU-5A/A, GAU-5A/B, and GAU-5P. Only the GAU-5A/B possessed a forward assist; they appear to be surplus XM177E2 absorbed into USAF inventory.
The GAU-5P is the longest, equipped with a 14.5" barrel. Many of the older weapons were eventually converted to this variant when the individual weapon required rebarreling.
Several years back, the GAU-5 still in USAF service were eventually upgraded with a 14.5" M4-configuration barrel using a 1-7" twist. These upgraded models were redesignated GUU-5P.
As of November 2002, the USAF began to procure flat-top M4 fitted with the M68 CCO to replace their older M16/M16A2 rifles and GAU-5/GUU-5 carbines.
