Well, he used the laser on the unit anyway. Pretty brilliant if you ask me:

PORT ANGELES, Wash. -- A police officer used a Taser to help a toddler unlock his mother’s car after she left her keys inside, according to the Port Angeles Police Department.
The 2-year-old boy was sitting in the middle of the front seat playing with his mom’s CD player when Port Angeles Police Officer Glenn Wood responded to the scene.
The windows of the Ford Taurus were rolled all the way up and the car had electric locks.
The mother tried to coax her son to unlock the door, but knew that he was not old enough to understand the situation.
After thoroughly checking the vehicle, Wood realized that there was no practical way to unlock it.
Wood then got the idea of using his Taser to distract the toddler and lead him to one of the doors.
“I have four kids and I know that a 2-year-old loose in the car is as good as a trunk monkey if you can just figure out how to motivate him to do what you want,” said Wood.
Wood then turned on his laser on his stun gun.
After yelling, “Get the dot!” the toddler began to follow the laser.
The child started scooting across the seat while trying to capture the dot that Wood was moving around.
Wood led the toddler to the door lock.
After repeated attempts by Wood to get the toddler to press the button, on the fourth try it finally worked.
Afterward, Wood chuckled and said, “I can’t believe that worked.”

And people get insulted when you compare their kids to your dogs...:D

That's pretty slick.
My son would then want the taser after he saw what it did. Ooh, it makes a dot!

Accident perhaps? She did call for help pretty quick, so don't be so quick to send her to the chair. Hell, I've left my keys in the ignition and locked my truck running four times now. I bet she said 'Oh s*** as she watched the door close.
Must be tough being perfect, eh?

Obviously, so she would have a reason to call the police and have them send a hot officer over.

Wait, this thread is off track. I distinctly read the word, "cop." Ya'll aren't fooling me... He was obviously just itching to use his taser on somebody. Good thing the mom got there just in time to prevent her child from further harm! Sheesh, cops nowadays....

That's using the ol noggin. Great job officer!

I can't possible fathom how this is firearms related. It wasn't even a laser on a firearm. Oh, that's right. People think this is a forum about cops.

Why did she leave a two year old in a car by himself?
My wife has done it twice, once with each daughter. One time she was leaving the grocery store. Once she opened the door and put in the toddler and turned around and somehow hit the lock with the keys on the seat and the door shut. Luckily a locksmith happened to be on the parking lot and opened the door for her that time.
The other time she had left the 3 year old in the car seat with it undone while she was filling up with gas. It was a Jeep Cherokee and she closed the door with the ac running and the rugrat was climbing around inside and locked the door. She freaked out, and another by chance occurrence, our neighbor the sheriff pulled in next to her. After about 5 minutes of the wife and the sheriff coaxing her, the 3 year old got the door unlocked.
So don't shoot her down, accidents do happen. But after the first occurrence I put a hideakey on all the vehicles, and during the second occurrence we had just sold the previous vehicle and bought the minivan, which didn't have the hideakey on it anywhere.

Clever officer.
Clever child.
Mom? Not so much. Next time she exits the car I hope she takes the keys with her before someone hops in and takes off with junior in the car or junior starts the car while Mommy is busy outside the car.

It happens, man. Maybe she put the kid in the car and closed the door to go around to the other side when it got locked. I can almost guarantee that it was a simple accident. Hey, they even have a Onstar commercial that deals with just this situation.

That was pretty smart thinking. Good for him.
I admit, the title fooled me. Although there are times I'm tempted to think using a taser on a toddler might just fit the bill . . .

Well, the thread has done its tour in GGD, and now in NFW.
I suppose the next stop for a thread like this would be over in S&T.
Hey, travel is broadening, right?

Well I suppose I'm guilty of hasty assumption. One caustic response aside, I appreciate your more likely explanations. When I read the story my first thought was "did this woman actually go into the store while her two year old was by himself in the car?", simply because that sort of thing does happen. Every so often you hear about a child suffering a sometimes fatal heat stroke after being left in a car. Unfortunately I see very young kids left alone in cars at the grocery store all the time.

I'm a little paranoid about taking my keys out every time I get out of the car, but became especially careful about it after our daughter was born and my SIL had her little darling hit the electric door lock on the passenger side (locking every door simultaneously). Luckily my nephew smacked the switch again unlocking the door and giving my wife's sister to yank the door open before he triggered it again. Having heard the tale I redoubled my efforts to make sure to pull the key just in case Ms. Bug played with the lock while I was pumping gas.

I carry a key ring with my car keys on it.
I carry another key chain with my house key(s) and A COPY OF EVERY CAR KEY on it.
Everywhere, all the time.
I've had my kids lock me out of three cars. Sometimes amusing, sometimes not.
I finally decided that extra keys were cheap and locksmiths and tow trucks and having mommy and/or friends drive all the way across town with a spare key were a) not cheap, b) a lot of trouble, and c) embarrassing.
So now I have a redundant key for every car on me at all times.

No kids here, but there's a reason I keep a spare key to my car tucked inside my wallet. It's saved me before.
