My first 1911!

April 10, 2008, 07:58 PM
I was going to wait a couple more days to buy it, but prices were going up so I decided to move up the schedule a bit. It's shipping right now, this is what I chose to get (

It's nothing too fancy, but since I've got a limited budget I figure that the cost v. bells and whistles ratio will do the job nicely for the next few years. Should be able to pick it up on Monday or Tuesday!

Looked at one this morning. They seem to be very nice guns and are getting good reviews. I like the flat mainspring housing, but I think the finely checkered frontstrap could (COULD!) chew up fingers. I would buy one if I could find a nice used one in my budget...about $350 or so.

Enjoy it and give us a range report when you can!

Just picked it up today, here is a pic: (

I'm thinking of putting on some wood grips, aside from that keeping it stock. Haven't had a chance to take it out yet, I'll post a range report once I do!

I wound up putting some smooth wood grips on mine, the plastic ones are pretty agressive. They are designed not to slip out of your hand. But after a long shooting session, they work on your hands a bit. I haven't noticed the front checkering being too rough. You may take a few minutes to get used to the Heinie straight 8s, but I have grown to like them. Good luck!

I just ordered this today. It is also my first 1911

Range Report:

I took it out for the first time today (I've been busy), and I must say I'm very satisfied! I don't keep my targets, so I don't have a picture to post up, but the gun definitely will shoot as straight as I let it!

I did have one issue, a failure to feed on the third magazine. After several tries with no luck I pulled the round from the mag and things worked fine after that, so I think it was an issue with the round and not the gun.

I must say, I am quite satisfied with my purchase!

Congratulations! I think that would be the Taurus that would convince me to buy it first, that or one of their 9mm snubbies.

They look great for the $$, and a single failure your first time out with a new gun is no biggie.

That should be a lot of fun and at that price you can buy two and give one to me.

That's an evil looking lil B!tc# isn't she??? I like that. and the second one looks pretty aggressive too.

Sorry, I's a starving student. :) I knew a guy in Utah selling one for cheap about a month ago, but my brother in Ogden picked it up.

Nice gun I have shot quite a few 1911s and I was really impressed
with the Taurus. For the money it cant be beat and if it were a
couple hundred more it would still be worth a look.

Nice choice. Glad to hear it shoots good for you.

I picked up the stainless PT1911 at cabelas for $659.00.It has a lot of nice features for the price. I compared it to the much higher priced kimbers they had and couldn't see any differences, except for the unpolished feed ramp on the kimber that was $300.00 more! I took it to range last week, 200 rnds through it with no problems, but the Heine straight 8 sights take a little getting used to, after about 30 rnds i had it figured out.BTW, Feud, i bought it on friday the 11th after reading your post, i hope you like yours as much as i do mine

Was that the Cabela's out in Glendale? I've never made it out to see it, the Bass Pro Shop is a five minute drive away so I've never wanted to spend the gas to head out that way, but I hear it's nice.

Was down at Range 15 at Ft. Lewis one weekend not long ago ... met a guy who let me examine his new PT-1911 and then put a few mags through it ... I'm rather a 1911 snob, but I have to admit, I was pretty impressed with the whole package. Don't really like the big logo and all the writing on the slide, thought the rowel hammer could have been done better, but other than those minor complaints, the pistol shot accurately and was 100% reliable. I can see the attraction, especially at the price for all the features -- around here, you can pick one up for more'n $150 less than a SA Loaded.

Seem to recall the esteemed Clint Smith praising the Taurus PT-1911 in his column in American Handgunner a few months back ...
