The folks at benchcrafted (http://www.benchcrafted.com/)have come up with a system with a strong magnet inside the wood hold any ferrous material to the surface. Much prettier than the exposed magnet system (http://www.chefdepot.net/racks.htm) I have in my kitchen.

Is that a magnetic strip? I was told never to store any knives whether defense or kitchen on a magnet holder. It was on the woodworking forums where the guys are nuts about sharp chisels and the point was the magnetization of the knives makes it hard to sharpen because the material being removed magnetizes back to the sharpening surface. Something about making it hard to get a good burr going.
I have no idea if its true because I don't store knives that way but I thought I would share.....

It shouldn't matter.

I hate sharpening magnetized blades of any kind.
Knives, tools, you name it, I hate it!
I wouldn't be caught dead sticking a fine knife to an industrial strength magnet!

With some proper knives, that actually looks quite nice. :)
I'd need to magnetize the entire wall -not that I'd want the wife to see my collection...

I am going to take a stab at this, even though I will probably be wrong, but my guess is that RC doesn't like all the magnetized detritus cluttering up his stones....

Couldn't you just degauss your knife before sharpening it?

this...
I am a advide wood work( both prof and rec) It always cracks me up when see people post pics of thier new tool holder... that is nothing more then a strong magnet.
Infact, the guy I use to send all my blades/ knifes( for tools)/bits too, had a 50% surcharge if he to demagnetize the tool... sadly he died in jan... I really need to find a new guy...

Both the pictures in this thread came from the manufacturer's website. I believe they said all the knives in that picture were from Bark River. I just took a quick look at the BRKT website, and it looks like that knife is a "Rogue."
My Mom has had a similar magnetic strip in her kitchen for many years.
Try sharpening a magnetized blade with all the removed steel trying to stick to the blade and you will know why.
I am the guy that sharpens my Mothers knives and as far as I can tell them spending time on that strip has not transfered any magnetism to the steel.
