ok, after much considering and much advice I've decided to get a bolt-action .308 and scope it, as a general purpose hunting rifle.

Looking around found me two choices, both of which I like the looks of.

Ruger M77 MkII Sporter - cool stock, stainless parts for weather resistance. Have been very impressed with my other Ruger weapons.
20" barrel, total weight under 7 pounds.

Remington Model Seven - slightly shorter and lighter. Brother owns one in .223 that is way older than he is, and it looks and shoots brand new.

Either way, I'll be getting it in .308 Win (maybe the best all-around caliber) so it will suffice for all lower 48 hunting types and share ammo with a future FAL or M1A.

Can anybody share their experiences with either of these guns?

Also, what is a fair price for one, new & used?

Thanks!

Feel and fondle one of each, and see which fits you better. Better fit = better shootability.

You can find Distributor prices in Shotgun News; a dealer will add a bit for profit, plus NICS fee and sales tax.

Buying from an individual will save you the NICS fee and sales tax--and often there will be a sling and scope on the rifle--if you find an individual with a table at a gunshow. Those rifles are not often sold through newspaper ads or trade papers.

I agree with Art. Buying a used gun can really save big bucks, and often comes with extras. Face it, most folks don't ever shoot a gun to even begin to wear it out. (except us, of course:D )
