"A man charged in the shooting death of a Federal Way police officer pleaded not guilty in King County Superior Court Wednesday.

Jason Scott Roberts, 28, is charged with one count of aggravated first-degree murder and two counts of second-degree assault.

Police allege Roberts shot and killed Officer Patrick Maher on Aug. 2 after grabbing the officer's service weapon during a scuffle.

Maher died of a gunshot wound just below his bulletproof vest.

The assault charges stem from allegations that Roberts pointed the gun at his brother and his brother's girlfriend before the shooting.

Roberts is being held without bail at King County Jail. He's due back in court next Tuesday, when lawyers plan to discuss a deadline for a decision on whether prosecutors will seek the death penalty.

Unless defense attorneys ask for more time, prosecutors have 30 days from Wednesday's arraignment to make the decision.

The only other sentencing alternative for aggravated murder is life in prison without possibility of parole.

Meaning he'll be back on the streets in what: about ten years?
