Gun in Oven Shoots Woman

The Associated Press

August 13, 2003, 7:30 AM EDT

A 22-year-old woman was wounded when a handgun that had been hidden inside an oven discharged when she opened the door, police said.

Colsaun Bailey, the 17-year-old alleged owner of the gun, was arrested, though police said they did not believe he fired the weapon, The Journal News reported Wednesday.

"We are operating on the assumption that nobody picked up the gun and fired it," police Capt. John McCoy told the newspaper.

Police said Bailey put two handguns in a bag then placed it inside the oven, which someone later turned on. When the woman opened the oven door to see why smoke was coming from it, one of the guns discharged, striking her, police said.

One bullet hit her in the forearm, hip and thigh, authorities said. Police said her wounds did not appear to be life-threatening.

Bailey and another man took her to the hospital and told officials she had been hurt by a glass exploding in the oven, police said. But officials thought the injuries looked like bullet wounds and called police.

Bailey was arraigned on assault and weapons charges and ordered held without bail.

A Yonkers firearm training officer said the Monday night mishap was plausible.

"We've had weapons that were in fires and the gun exploded," Chris Wargocki told The Journal News. "The gun can discharge or blow up from heat."

Maybe he was heat treating it or powder coating and forgot to unload it.

Wait a minute... 17 year olds can't buy guns in New york there is no way this could have happened.

I bet it was hidden in a hungry man dinner by some disgruntled employee...

Seems like this happens every couple of years.

Makes you wonder who the trial lawyers will blame; the gun maker, or the oven maker.

Kind of stupid. I might be wrong, but an oven might not be the best place to hide a firearm. Maybe they could pass another law...

We don't need another law, we just need a warning on the gun stating;

WARNING: Do not store loaded gun in Oven.

We should be able to get someone to aprove this just like the warning on Preparation-H;

WARNING: Do not take internally.

PEOPLE NEED TO BE WARNED!!! :what:

Probably one of those evil "assault ovens" with a capacity of more than 10 guns ...

Sounds to me like her son's a gang-banger who got hold of a couple of guns and hid them in what he thought was a safe place. I'm not surprised that multiple discharges occurred: if one gun was a revolver, fully loaded, then some or all of the cylinder-full could have discharged when "cook-off" temperature was reached. Only the one in front of the barrel would do serious damage, but bits of the other rounds/bullets could have also struck the woman.

I think it may be possible to be struck many times by the same bullet. Possibly if she were kneeling or squatting down to peer inside the oven...

Lets ban all the ovens. Its for the chirruns.

Its obviously the oven manufacturer's fault. They should have known that a darwin candidate would put guns in it.

When the woman opened the oven door to see why smoke was coming from it, one of the guns discharged, striking her, police said. Does this strike anybody else as an awfully fishy coincidence? The round in the chamber just happened to cook off right at the same split moment she opened the door and the gun just happened to be pointing right at her.

Man this is pathetic, if this guy is not the world's biggest moron (the guy who put the gun in the oven) he's a close sixth, behind the Senators of NJ, CA, Schummer and Ted Kennedy.

It was a cook off and not the type you get the County Blue Ribbon for either. Horse Stroganoff is cooked with horse flesh, not Colt. Clearly it's a case of misinterpeting the cookbook. :p

one of the guns discharged
Perhaps an accurate statement this time!

If an autoloader with multiple round in the mag was in a heavy bag like a backpack, wouldn't it be possible that it was held steady enough that after the first round in the chamber cooked off, another was autoloaded and then fired again? Not saying it happened here, but I bet it could.

Regarding the timing of opening the door . . . Some days you're the bug; some days you're the windshield.

We will soon be seeing labels on ovens. Do not store firearms or explosives in this unit.

Did no one pick up on this and write a letter to the editor?

"The gun can discharge or blow up from heat."

An empty gun might melt from sufficient heat but it takes ammo to cook off. Why do we let these idiots make statements like this?

Yes. Some are idiots. BTDT.

How can a 17 be the "owner" of two handguns? Must have been hot, no? :p

It seems "I put the gun in the oven for safe keeping and forgot about it" is becoming all too common of an excuse for those that mishandle firearms.

I remember the following story because it was a big stink here in Michigan. Supposedly, the round went through the back of the oven, the wall and into the 5 month old that was lying on the couch.
Funny how the round in the bbl. cooked off and those in the magazine didn't. :scrutiny: With the barrel and metal slide/action surrounding that round, those in the plastic frame and thin wall mag should have cooked off first. No?

http://www.jointogether.org/gv/news/summaries/reader/0,2061,552660,00.html

"A 46-year-old Michigan woman received probation for the unintentional gun death of her five-month-old grandson, the Associated Press reported July 13.

Donna Sue Miller of Cassopolis had left a loaded .40-caliber Glock pistol in the broiler compartment of her stove. The gun discharged, killing 5-month-old Dylan Christopher Goodwin.

"I didn't know the gun was loaded, said Miller during her court hearing. "I loved Dylan."

According to police, Miller put the gun in the broiler for temporary safekeeping. It remained there for two days until she put a pizza in the oven to cook. The heat from the oven caused a round of ammunition in the gun's chamber to fire.

Under a plea agreement, Miller received five years probation. Cass County Circuit Court Judge Michael E. Dodge also ordered Miller to complete a counseling program to help her handle the grief caused by her grandson's death.

Miller, who was originally charged with second-degree child abuse, would have faced two years in prison."

The ones in the mag could have cooked off also. Only the one in the chamber would present a real danger.

Okay, okay ... I admit it! I've put guns in the oven before!

Well ... parts of guns that I wanted to dry, anyway.
1 hour at 200 degrees works like a charm to get that last bit of water out of gun parts you've just poured boiling water all over.
You know ... to wash away the salts formed by corrosive primers.

Since she was supposedly bending over to look in an oven, it seems like it would be very possible for a bullet to pass through her forearm, strike her hip and be deflected out the thigh.

It would be nice if the reporter would let us know if the round that "cooked off" had a dent in the center of the primer. That would be a very useful piece of information. I didn't think rounds cooked off at 400F, but if the primer was not struck, then evidence is evidence. 2 rounds cooking off at the same time is BS until I see the primers.

I don't like how this so-called expert said that it was plausible that the gun could "blow up" - when heated.

Sure, the rounds could cook off, but the GUN can't "blow up".

If these reporters would take ten minutes to do a little bit of research before regurgitating all of this stuff out onto their computer keyboards, this misinformation wouldn't get so out of hand.

IDIOTS!!!!!!!

In this situation, both the handgun "owner", the reporter and the "gun expert" are ALL INCOMPETENT.

Hmmm ...
What happens if a few rounds cook off in the magazine? Probably not good for the gun, and it might well be said to have "blown up", eh wot?
