I bought a Springfield milspec 1911 about 6 weeks ago and have about 700 rounds through it. I'm still experiencing failures to feed, and as this is my 1st 1911, I'm not sure if this is normal break-in or not. They've grown less frequent, but I still have 1 every 150-200 rounds. I've tried only hardball winchester white box and independence ammo, so no JHP or wild bullet shapes yet. I've cleaned and lubed it with remington gun oil several times as well.

Do I need to send it back to the factory or is this normal?

FTF?

Have you tried different magazines on it?

Yes, I've tried both factory 7 round mags, and also a wilson combat 8 rounder.

And yes, failures to feed. Usually the round doesn't make it all the way into the chamber.

Is it always the first round, then everything else ok?

Or apparently random?

Which round causes the problem seems random, it's definitely not always the first or last.

Besides the above mentioned magazines, somethings you can check would be the smoothness of the feed ramp and breech face; also the fit and tension (too much can cause feed problems) of the extractor. You can find what to look for here:

same problem here! Bought one two years ago and had FTF every 50 or so. Thought a hundred rounds or more would break it in...wrong. Took it to a gun smith and had the ramp polished, ed brown extractor...etc. still have problems. Not sure what to do with it.

No this is not normal. Call the factory, tell them your problem. Get if fixed under warranty.

Do not mess or screw with the pistol, that will void the warranty.

You could call the factory and beg for mercy. You should not have had any gunsmith work on it. While you can remove the extractor, you cannot remove the polishing. The factory has every right to say, "someone messed it up and now its all yours". Maybe if you ask nice, they will do something for you.
