It seems that a local PD officer has lost the AR 15 that was in the trunk of his car.
It's loaded, and accompanied by four fully-loaded magazines.

Yeah, I don't know if they know whether it was stolen or lost. As for the picture aired, if you were watching News 13, no, it wasn't a pic of the actual rifle, and probably not even the issue one. The pic was most likely pulled off of the AP graphics bank.

But man, that pic is exactly the EBR setup that I have a hardcore jones for right now...

Before we all go out on a "this officer should be fired" rant, recall that this happens every so often. I know for a fact that the interior trunk release pulls in the crown vic can and do get pulled by gear shifting around in the trunks of cruisers. Several times I have been driving down the road and had my trunk pop open.

Yes, pop open. It was securely latched prior.

How do I know this? Well, once I noticed it was open, mentally kicked myself, and closed it. I then tugged on it. And tugged again. It was shut.

I hopped back in and found it open again a few miles down the road.

I had the pull-tab removed and it has not happened since. If the officer had the AR case atop a trunk organizer (which is standard), it would be at the perfect height to fall out and end up on the roadside. This happened to at least one officer in my PD with a shotgun.

Hey, in the early 80s the Michigan State Police lost one, that I know of, car. Big, blue, red light on top.....gone. And never recovered.

Guys, I can tell you from experience that if you have enough guns around you all day and try to cary them with you...move them from car to car...deploy it on felony stops..ect. You will eventually lose some piece of gear. I know of agents that have left m-4s leaning against cars when a motorcade had to bug out in a hurry and another that had a pistol fall out of a holster and then out of a helo. It happens. The gun is a tool, we don't cry when we lose a hammer.

As for theft, its quite possible. But as for it requiring a big bump...If the officer had the AR case atop a trunk organizer (which is standard), it would be at the perfect height to fall out and end up on the roadside....I'll repeat myself. The ubiquitous Rubbermade trunk organizer is the perfect height for something sitting atop it to slide aft, clear the lip of the rear of the trunk, and end up on the roadside. And yes, magazines and all. It was probably all in some "tactical rifle" bag that the agency bought in order to avoid the greater expense if buying a proper rack.

Many agencies do not put racks in the cruisers, for entirely bad reasons (usually $$$, but sometimes its an effort to be PC). IMO, if you have a gun, you need a rack for it. Period. End of story. Yes, that probably means putting a rack in every cruiser. Yes, its expensive. Consider that before you say "yes" to the fed.gov grant you're going to use to buy the weapons. Otherwise you have unsecured weapons in cars. Thats a bad thing.

How come I never find that type of stuph on the streets. I find watches, wallets, purses but never any guns. Why? Why?

Course, I tend to turn in almost everything, but that's a different matter. One time I found a wallet and his paycheck stub led me to call Civil Service. Guy was an attorney with the public defender's office. Another time I found a wallet belonging to a woman. When I saw the NA coin, I knew it was someone I wouldn't want to meet. Happily her pop lived 10 minutes from my home. A couple of days ago I was on a bicycle and spotted $5. I stopped, rolled back and recover "lunch" money. :D

I have to second Coronach view that things to bounce and pop out of "local government" maintained units. A few years a ago while working a at EMS as a reserve we are loading a patient to have a car pull up and the nice people gave me and my partner our turnout gear bags complete with turnout gear. Seems the side door on the ambulance unlatched dumped both bags out and then relatched on the way to the call. Why we didn't lose the spare drug kit in the same compartment is beyond me.

FN C1 bounce out of the back of a Duce onto a highway (dropped on it's butt and litteraly bounced over tailgate)

GPMG (M1917 in .308) pop off a pintle mount and into the 5 foot bush

Sterling SMG lost in a lake when troopie fell in.

lever and shotgun in case go off roof rack and into the long grass beside a ditch.

yup, guess it's only cops who ever drop/loose things...
