and can't spend a dime more.

No preference as to semi or bolt action, but a bolt gun would require a scope. This rifle would be used for hunting and target shooting at a max of 300 yards.

What do you recommend? And, if a bolt gun, what scope to go with it?

IMO, Savage 10FP (standard stock).

Should leave you with ~$150 for a scope/rings/base/sling. Can't suggest a good scope for that price though.

willing to peruse the used racks and newspapers? I'd look for a second hand Remington (short actions are hard to find used in these parts though, for all the folks turning 'em into snip...rmmm... tactical precision rifles.). :)

Then like a Leupold VXII or som'n.. should be in the 600 ballpark, especially if you can find the Remington with usable bases and rings on it.

you'll probablly either want to get the Accu-trigger or spend $80 on a Shaprshooter aftermarket one. Savage's are usually very accurate but have poor triggers

If you shop real, real carefully, you might find a Remington 700 for that price. I got a new one in 22-250 2 years ago for $550

There was a Tikka in our local shop marked down to around $500 IIRC some time back (I think it was a 30-06). Point is, there are deals out there if you're willing to look.

Also, look thru the "used" rack. Most centerfires that are traded in are unfired or fired very, very little.

For an inexpensive scope, you might start with a Weaver.

You could get a CETME and have a couple hundred left over.

You could get a Saiga AK in .308. I don't know how the accuracy is though.

What about those Remington slide action thingies?

find a rem 700 on a used rack, order the talley lightweight scope ring/base (the ring and base is 1 solid piece, and it is usually less expensive than going w/ leupold rings and bases, but so much more elegant than a weaver set-up), and a leupold vx-2. all in will be right at $600, perhaps less if you do enough legwork... w/ some effort, you'll find a used 700 w/ a fair scope for $450-ish.

I would look into a Savage or a CZ.

I got my Remington 700 ADL in .308 NEW (not used) with a Swift 3x-9x scope (nice basic scope, works very nicely) for $598. That price included scope mounts, shipping, the works. I've been very happy w/ that setup. Last fall it put my 120 pound, 7 point buck on the ground with one shot at 170 yards. It's pretty hard to argue w/ results like that. My $2*10^-2...

the new savages with the Acu-trigger are much better...

stocks still suck though...

I love mine!!

should be able to get a new one for around $450, then try to find a decent fixed scope for it.

If you want a heavy barrel, the Savage 10FP-LE2 is the way to go. $459-$499 depending locale.
