Oh the choices! Little help?

I've had my eye on three rifles for a while now. A Kahr M1 Thompson, an M1 Garand and a HK-91/PTR-91. Some people dreamed of being the President(just as one example) when they were kids, I dreamed of being a Thompson ower. Unfortunately certain *cough*BS*cough* laws don't allow me to get a full-auto for "cheap". I've also heard that the new production M1s are crappy. Can anyone attest to/against this?

I'm also unsure who to buy an HK-91 and/or M1 Garand rebuild from. I've seen some HK-91s offered by Century Arms but I've never seen any of their work(save hearing that their CETMEs are crap). Any advice there? And I'm pretty much clue-less about where to get a good Garand rebuild(seen plenty of placesthat have them but I don't know how good their work is). Any help would be appreciated.

Feanaro;

I believe it is still possible to obtain a DCM M-1, not a rebuild. This can be checked out through the NRA. If you are not a member, it would be a goog reason to become one. Pretty sure I saw the announcement in the latest issue of the American Rifleman.

All you have to do to be eligible is shoot a cmp course to familiarize yourself with the M1 and for $450 they will send it to your door,althogh I think there is a waiting list because they only release a certain amount of rifles per year.

From the CMP site:

You must be a current member of a CMP-affiliated gun club or state association;
A U.S. citizen aged 18 or older;
Satisfy CMP criteria for marksmanship participation within the past five years (this requirement is waived for law-enforcement officers, military personnel, veterans and certain others;
Not prohibited by federal, state, or local law from purchasing or possessing a rifle.

I think my range is with CMP but I'm not quite 18 yet. Father is though and a vet to boot. No silly test to bother with. ;)
