In watching the History Channel's US Marshal marathon today, I caught a glimpse of a rifle they were using in one of the 'old west' segments.

It was a lever gun, longish, I'd say 22"-24" barrel, long wood forearm, and a golden or brass colored rectangular receiver. At first I thought it was a Henry Golden Boy, but I looked, it wasn't. It was really rugged, yet sleek looking

Any ideas?

my money is on the winchester 1866 "improved henry" aka "yellow boy". This was the first redesign of the original Henry rifle after the rights and patents were sold to winchester. the improvements added in were the wood forearm (instead of no forearm and the barrel adn mag tube heating up if more than a few shots were fired), a solid mag tube, as opposed to having an open bottom with a "tab" on the follower that moved down teh tube as each round was chambered, necessitating the "henry hop" hand shift when the follower reached your off hand, and to facilitate this last change the "king's patent loading gate" in the right side of the receiver, that is seen in some form on every single tube fed lever gun since.

Ps. the current "henry golden boy" is in no way related to the above gun. it's a modern .22 made to look like the 1866. the current Henry company is just a company banking on a well known, old name that many link to the old west.
