Diameter of Red Dot Scope?

It seems that Red Dots come in 30mm, 42mm, maybe even 50mm. I was wondering (other than price) what the difference night be with the different sizes.

Are large diameters more likely to get knocked out of alignment?
Are smaller diameters more difficult to "sight" than larger ones?

I was thinking BIGGER is BETTER. -I'd have to worry less about the position of my eye relative to the gun.

What do you guys think???

I have a 30mm BSA red dot on a .22 pistol. Very easy to sight in. I don’t think there would be any difference sighting in the larger mm scopes, you just have a larger “hole” with a red dot in the middle to look through. Any scope no matter the size can get knocked out of alignment if its hit hard enough. You could always go to a shop that sells the different sizes and mount each on a rifle, then look through them to see which would work best for you.

The larger diameter can only be appreciated if you are speed shooting with a pistol. Tasco started the trend a few years back when they had a competitive shooting team they used for R&D. If you are shooting a rifle you will not notice much difference.

I've shot with a 1", 30mm and a 42mm. The larger the tube, the easier it is to focus on the target, put the red pipper where the bullet should go and ignore the scope itself.

That said, the 30mm is probably fine. You don't want to go smaller than that though.

BTW: Shooting with both eyes open is a must with a red dot.

Thanks guys, I think I get the idea. - And one of the reasons for the red dot is so that I CAN keep both eyes open!

Sounds like diameter isn't as critical as I thought. I am starting to think about a Kobra sight now though . By the time I buy the scope mount for my AK and THEN add even a cheap red dot sight I will be near the price of a Kobra since it comes with the mount for the AK. (just figured this out... :banghead: )

I am ASSUMING that the Kobra would be better than the average "cheap" red dot.

Thanks again!
