Fall - South PA possible THR meet

OK guys ... on another thread this cropped up ... and I have looked into things this end. I'd reckon pretty much anyone within say - a 2 hour radius from this PA area (Bedford County - 4th from left at bottom!!!) ... also probably some MD guys and maybe east OH would be within a not unreasonable drive. Others from further afield still welcome, naturally.

I spoke to the club owner last night and they have a compo' free weekend Sat/Sun Oct 25/26. I would anticipate a Sunday shoot ... with the Saturday late pm into evening being just for those who maybe come further and need to camp ... it should be possible to accomodate a few. I guess even Saturday late pm a few rounds might go into the berm!! - altho days will be horribly short by then of course ..... but probably not as hot as right now!

The pistol/rifle range section is only 100yds ..... but has three concrete bench rests under cover .... plenty enough space for a smallish group.

There is a good clubhouse, with ''facilities'' ... and if I can coerce someone (honey ......???) ....... into helping with cooking on the Sunday ... we should be not going hungry. Only slight downside ... the club is very much a business and to have the whole deal and facilities for w/e .. I'll be charged hundred and a quarter .... well, if even a dozen or so showed up and contributed ten bucks .... we'd pretty much cover things. .... which would just leave food, which wouldn't be too big a deal anyways.

So .... if there is likely to be any interest at all ... do say. If it should turn out that we can get enough people together ... it would be useful for those concerned to PM me and let me know their email addy .... after which I can form a mailing group and stay in touch that way.

So ... whadya think??:)

Just keep us in the loop.

Where is it near? What town?

P95Carry
August 13, 2003, 10:08 PM
Some ways away for you Soda I'd reckon. But ... get your Rand McNally .......

Go to South PA - West of center. Look at bottom counties starting from West by OH border .... count along to East to fourth .. that is Bedford County... next to West of Somerset County.

Also ... look for I 70 (Turnpike) and find where it crosses I 99 (was 220) .... this is near Bedford Town ..... a little ways to north I 99 has an exit for Route 56 at Cessna - which if taken to West goes clear to Johnstown

From Cessna .... the range is about 12 miles. Does that help any??

I'll try to make it. I figure that you are probably 2-3 hours from here. Post an address and we can all do the Mapquest thing and get directions and a pretty good idea how long it will take.

I'll probably try to leave Saturday after shabbos (the sabbath) ends. That time of year we're talking leaving sometime between 6:30 and 7:30 probably. It will be dark by the time I get there but I'll still probably try camping (I love camping). It sounds like you are saying that a few people could probably camp on the grounds. Would the "facilities" be open at night or would we need to make other arrangements (i.e. bring a shovel)? I guess since I would be arriving well after dark (probably 9 or 10pm) I'd possibly just get a room or come up Sunday morning instead, but I'd really love to have an excuse to do some camping. Anyone else interested in camping? Any others in central MD who might not mind going late on Sat or early on Sun want to drive up?

Since there sounds like a financial committment for you, so you want to be sure of interest, I'll say that I will come. I don't know for sure if I can, but even if I can't I'll put my $10-15 in for it. Let me know where/when to send it.

Spackler ....I'll be there, barring any unforseen circumstances. Is the club up toward Pleasantville? Close Sir . very close.

In fact .. turning off R56 to go South on R96 to New Paris ... the range is 1 mile before New Paris .... quite a good sign on right heading South ''Chestnut Ridge Gun and Bow Club'' .... nearer the time I will post a GIF probably to confirm the exact position but that should pretty much let anyone see where it is.

Pappy .....

Hyndman is quite a ways further South on 96 .. but if you went North from there on 96 you'll get to Manns Choice .... and next north from there is Schellsberg .... and another 5 miles North of that is New Paris ... almost at the range.

Chaim .. thx fella .... would hope you might make it of course. Actuall adress? .. well, see above re my description .... just go to mapQuest and punch in New Paris .. and then imagine 1 mile North of there .. it ain't too bad to find at all.

I have yet to see what bits will be best for erecting a tent but ... like as not, as I will be the responsible dude for this ... I'll be there until late saturday eve to see everyone is set up .... and then provided someone can be ''guardian'' .... the club house can be kept open .. or a key left etc ... we can work that out. main thing is to have ''facilities'' available so that no shovels needed!!:D

Don't worry yet re finance side ... we'll see how things develop.

But may I add .... anyone who so far thinks they can/will come along ... drop me a PM with your email addy ... that way I can start to build a list of ''possibles'' and so use that as a mailing list later.

It's early days but .. even if we only get a handful who can make it ... it'd be great. Generally, in this huge nation ... we are so separated by distance but .. any chance to get a few like minded people together ..... gotta be good. I'd like to meet about every damn one of the guys who post here ...... wishful thinkin of course!!

Perfessr

Bit of a haul but .... Turnpike most of way .. not too bad. I reckon for me - - Harrisburg, York etc .. is not too bad a run (even if horribly flat!!!). :)

As I said above .. those interested such as to be at least ''possibles'' ... PM me with email addy .... OK.

I'm soon to quit and may be away from puter on and off quite a bit over next few days (daughter and her old man visiting .... went to range today and i have a notion ... we'll be back there tomorrow!:D ) ... but keep the feedback comin .... and PM .... I'll have to check my spam filter and make sure new addy's don't get ''caught''!

Later

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Oh .. suggestion .. if emailing me later .. use subject line like ''Fall South PA shoot'' ... that way I can spot it if spam filter intercepts!!
August 13, 2003, 11:06 PM
Well Mike ... Sunday Oct 26th .... that's the shoot day I'm planning .. and anyone with long drive can camp over Sat night .. should be able to cope with some of those methinks. You'll have quite a trip from VA but .. be great if you could make it.
Even if wet .. I'd reckon we can make a great day of it. I'll post more details re what to bring nearer the time if we have a definite ''go'' status .... tho, the way it looks right now I'm tempted to think we are already viable ... and can make it work.
Watch this space ......... :p
Sounds like a good plan, I'll try and talk the wife in to letting me escape for a bit.
Chaim, I pass through the area that the shoot is in so know it somewhat decent. We could car pool if you want, should take about 1 3/4 to 2 hours.
Chaim, I pass through the area that the shoot is in so know it somewhat decent. We could car pool if you want, should take about 1 3/4 to 2 hours. A car pool would be great. You wouldn't mind waiting until late Sat to leave and then camp up there, setting up in the dark? Or would it be better to leave early Sunday?
I`d be interested if we can put together an eastern Pa./Western NJ car pool. Sounds like fun but 4hrs. each way is a long drive alone. Marcus
P95Carry
August 15, 2003, 08:06 PM
Marcus - you'd be most welcome if it can be worked with car pool .... way to go. It'd be Turnpike most of way for you guys so ..... straightforward if tedious. As I said earlier .. later on I'll post or email a map pic for everyone.
Don't forget too (anapex also) - if you can manage in near future to decide with some certainty that you'd like to make it .. PM me with email addy .... so I can add names to mailing list which will be useful nearer time.
I think I mentioned before .. the rifle/pistol range is not huge but .. quite nicely appointed. I'll post this pic of the firing point ..... you'll see we have some real nice benches. The clubhouse is outa site up the bank to right ... quite close...... plenty of parking space.
Damn she shoots well .... considering her last session was when they visited last year ........ maybe Dad's genes for shooting got transferred!!:)
Don't forget guys ..... as I mentioned earlier in thread ...... if you can come or at least see it as possible ... PM me with your email addy .. which I'll test and then put you on the mailing list for later when we get nearer the time.
I have the range rented for weekend but in fact ... would reckon that the Saturday is mainly for longer travellers ... who want to arrive and camp out, ready for shoot on Sunday.
I am hoping to coerce my spouse ... at least ... into helping out - so we have food available most of Sunday .... Saturday evening? .... well, probably best to pick up a take-out on way along.
I'll be giving out more details and a GIF map later on. But read earlier posts and you'll see pretty much where it is located.
chaim
September 11, 2003, 01:22 AM
It is still Sunday, Oct 26th right? If so I do plan to be there. Probably be camping the night before, though I won't be able to leave Baltimore until after the sabbath is over (I'll be leaving approx. 8:30 PM so I guess I'll get there between 10:30 and 11 PM).
P95Carry
September 11, 2003, 08:41 AM
Yeah Mike ... Sunday Oct 26 ..... been that all along!! I have booked range for the weekend in fact .... which allows for anyone coming along later in day on Saturday, so they can camp out and be there for Sunday morning.
I doubt we'll have exactly a crowd but am hopeful for a sufficient number to make it a great day, both socially and shooting-wise. As mentioned early on ...... the club room has ''facilities'' ... and I have coerced my dear wife to come along and cook us up some basic fare.
The difficulty might be .... for me, deciding not so much which guns to bring but which to leave behind!!:p I will try and bring stuff which others would most like to see or try ....... this can be worked out later.
Mike Irwin
September 11, 2003, 12:34 PM
I knew October 26 was being bandied about, but wasn't sure if that was a hard date or not.
Yep ... sure is rather a haul ....... appreciate that. Sorta trip that maybe is easier to consider in high summer.
However, will be hoping we can still have a good time even if numbers a tad limited.
So far, my email list is ten but not all are ''certains'' yet ... nevertheless, we have a working nucleus and hope for just a few more.
Please do drop me a PM if you think you can come ... with whoever .... and let me know your email address .. I am asking all who can come or hope to come to do this .... that way I build an email list for later use to disseminate info nearer the time.
Here is a small map .....
Just to help regarding the more local aspects. I'd suggest that anyone wanting more detailed info ... go to MapQuest, Expedia etc ... and punch in something from this map - which should then give a useful printable map.
This is only a ''thrown together'' diagram .. so if it makes no sense and you find it useless please say!!! It should tho I think do the job and, nearer the time i will issue it again and with the inclusion of a written guide also, giving a more detailed description.
P95, i just might make it to your shoot. seems my idea for one that weekend has tanked with only one guy interested on the opposite end of the state, so alas, i surrender. That is also the same weekend as the counter-protest at the pentagon, so if i hit the CP on sat, i just may be able to get to your place by sunday. only problem being, what to do with my weapons during my incursion into the disarmed victim zone..... sugjestions? also, how far are ya from DC?
David Park
September 24, 2003, 11:33 PM
Bigjake, the Pentagon is about 5 miles from where I live, so it'll be about 3 hours to the THR meet. Since the Pentagon is in VA, you shouldn't have to worry about having firearms in your trunk. If you're actually going INTO the Pentagon, the guys standing by the HMMVW with the .50-cal might want to search your vehicle :eek: , but there should be plenty of nearby parking in that area on the weekends.
Seriously old and new Smiths , maybe the Mini-14 , .357 lever gun, and well I haven't decided yet, anything anyone wants to try out ? Anything to do with a shotgun there ? David, Ray ....... thx for responding guys .... appreciate it.
We may not have a huge number but we'll make one real good day of it ..... the firing point is covered so unless snowstorm I think we'll cope!
FAL .... sounds good . I'll have L1A1 probably too. And multitude of Smiths? .... always good.
Probably have my Mini too and my .357 lever .... as caseydog sez ... anyone after trying anything specific then say in advance in case we can help.
Shotguns? Well ..... this club is VERY well equipped for trap and sporting also but .. I tend to think the setting up of trap house etc might cut across the rest of our shooting, bearing mind the daylight will be less. Bring one along and some ammo by all means .. if space then we'll see how the day looks.
When I send out later email I shall be needing to know timing etc for arrivals ... forget now but one or two maybe wanted to camp over .. so would need to know when to be there for arrivals so as to get set up. So when next mail comes thru ... be sure to get back to me.
Oh and .. anyone at all unclear re directions .. let me know. I will write out the local directions to help with the final stage later.
Looking forward to it.
