Police Shoot, Kill 150-Pound Cougar on Chicago's North Side (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,351337,00.html)

CHICAGO A 150-pound cougar was gunned down by Chicago police Monday after it was loose in a residential area on the city's North Side.

Several residents reporting seeing the cat early Monday and the officer shot the animal in an alley, police said.

Authorities said the cougar will be checked for any markings, chips or tags that would show if it was someone's pet rather than a wild animal.

Confirmed sightings of cougars, also known as mountain lions or pumas, are rare in Illinois but authorities in the Chicago suburb of Wilmette said they received several reports of cougar sightings during the weekend.

Are you kidding? Is that a real sign? in Illinois?

Did they have to kill the cougar?

Couldn't they have just shot the gun out of it's hand??

Usually, the sound of a shotgun chambering frightens them off.

But now that they have killed one, his homie's will be seeking retribution.
Its up to Chicago local PD to do a sweep of the surronding country side and make sure no Feral cats have access to illegal or "gun show loop hole" firearms. Specific raids should be conducted for automatic, auto aim, balistic nitrogeon tipped hollow point armor piercing anti-aircraft warheads.

Police claim that the animal pointed a handgun at them.

Witnesses state that the cougar was unarmed and on its way to give a piano recital at an orphans home.

When paramedics rolled the mountain lion over, several cheap handguns were found underneath it...

Is that sign real anywhere?

Anyway, the right side is confusing.

The Cougars Mama was quoted in recent newspaper articles as having said "He was a good Cub, trying to get his life together and turn it around" and "He never ate no one that didn't deserve it"...

I heard the NAACP (North American Association of Cougars and Pumas) is plannig a march and a rally because they say the killing is a blatant display of police hatred toward cougars.

Ice Cee (for Cougar) is going to record a cover of Cop Killer in the poor cat's honor.

This whole thing happened in our daughter's alley up in Roscoe Village!

This whole thing was just a few blocks from Wrigley Field.

Now the wife is freaked out wondering if there are others. My bet is that this was somebody's exotic pet that was turned loose in a local forest preserve. The idea of a Puma finding it's way from it's natural habitat somewhere out west, all the way into a major metropolitan area are slim to none.

Not that we have any shortage of forage for them here, over population of whitetails, plenty of small game, poodles and little rat dogs, not to mention my neighbor's outdoor cats (please).

On the other hand, we had a coyote wander into a Subway sandwich shop last fall and curl up by the cooler in the back of the shop.

Of course we have already had the PETA contingent demanding a police investigation as to why the animal was shot instead of just tranquilized and relocated. Wonder where they wanted it relocated to? Downers Grove or Skokie? Like Chicago cops carry tranq guns in the trunk of their cruisers.

And I just saw a video interview on CNN. At the end what was some guy saying?

"What I'm concerned about is the number of shots fired, I mean there are kids around and they were firing all of these bullets".

Yup, no other threat there, just a big kitty.

Many are starting to beleive the cougars have been making their way back east, slowly.

It's very hard to know how many of them there are because they aren't THAT large and the are especially secretive and skittish.

As well as nocturnal.

So, it is quite possible this was a wild cougar- as we are mixing our forests and our cities (gee, that was brilliant) there is a greater likelihood of encountering predators coming to prey upon the deer that live in our cities as well.

Ten to one it was a feral cat that the cops were attacked by.

Will there be a "lie-in" for the cougar or will they erect a scratching post in his honor?

Of course they are.. The heard about Chicagos' gun laws and figured it would be a nice spot to have an occaisional meal or two.

Sort of like a big game reserve, only this time it is for the animals, and the people are the prey.

Police HQ or Daley's office would be fine.

There are cougars in Michigan (south eastern MI, near Detroit). I would think a cougar could easily work it's way down from up north.
