Okay, I am really thinking that this might be my next purchase, but I need to get a little more informed about it.

First off, are these the series 80 (with the firing pin safety), or the series 70?
Are these very reliable with hollowpoint ammunition? Are they throated from the factory?
What do these usually run? (I realize that this will be different from locale to locale, but I would just like an idea.)

Are you happy with yours (if you have one)?

Thanks,
Wes

The Colt M1991A1 is a Series 80 pistol w/firing pin safety. They were all throated for JHP ammo, but the ones made since around 2000 have an improved throat design that's even better for reliable feeding. The ones with the old, billboard-sized "COLT M1991A1" were made from 1991 through around 2001. New ones made since are much more aesthetically pleasing, as they have brushed flats and a nicer-looking slide rollmark that says "Colt's Government Model". For that reason they're known as New-Rollmark (NRM) models.

Ugliness aside, the old 1991 Colts were good guns. Colt's QC period was at its low point during the early to mid 1990's however, so make sure you look carefully at any pistol made around that time period. Usually the problems will be obvious, like terrible fitting, uneven edges, and gritty action. If you buy a NRM Colt you'll be fine, as QC has pretty much rebounded since the 90's.

I had three 1991A1's over the years(Compact, Commander and Government). They all worked flawlessly with JHP's and were very accurate. The Compact was traded for a LW Officer's, the Commander went to my brother for a wedding present, and the Government was sold right after I got my deceased Father's old Series 70 back from the shop to a close friend!
But they are great budget level 1911's. All mine got skateboard tape, Wilson mags, tac thimb safties and the new 'drop in' beavertail. One got new sights, but really did not need them!
