Empty Holster Protest at IUPUI

During the week of April 21-25, 2008, IUPUI students will participate in the Second National Empty Holster protest here on campus. These students are members of the Students for Concealed Carry on Campus (SCCC) and will attend classes wearing EMPTY holsters. This symbolic protest is a result of state laws and campus policies that prohibit concealed weapons on college campuses in the hands of law - abiding citizens, and more specifically, concealed weapons permit holders.

Students participating in this protest will be wearing EMPTY holsters that are to be fully visible. Protestors will go about their daily activities and should not create any unnecessary disturbance. Please be advised that these students pose no threat to campus safety and are not carrying weapons.

If you want more information regarding the protest or interested in participating, please contact Jordan Stover at (989) 948-3931 or at stoverj@iupui.edu . You can also visit www.concealedcampus.org for more information.

This protest is planned by students, I wonder how the school administration views staff participation? I hope to see many empty holsters next week.

Is there some way that non-students can help support this? Maybe I should just put on a holster and stroll around my local campus. :)

SCCC is always in need of donations as we are hoping to incorporate soon. I would suggest that a donation through www.concealedcampus.com would be a great help if you aren't near a college campus. :)

And the response from the IUPUI Vice-Chancellor for Student Life:

Subject: [STLISERCOU-L] Important information to share within your schools/offices regarding an anticipated student protest April 21-25.

Dear Colleagues,
Please know that there is a small group of students who have indicated that from April 21-25 they intend to enact their constitutional right to express themselves. The nature of their expressio will be to wear an "empty gun holster" in plain view. While supporting the students right to express themselves this in no way should be construed as support for their position. There is however an important responsibility to inform our campus commuinity of this protest in order to minimize any disruption to the teaching, learning, research of the campus"

The following is a statement that describes the students' intended protest.
Please know that the Office of the Dean of Students is available to meet with faculty, staff, or students regarding how best engage this matter.

This reminds me that I need to get a holster by April 21st. I have the feeling I might be the only person on my campus wearing one.

From what I understand, every campus that has a chapter of the SCCC (Students for Concealed Carry on Campus) and some that don't are doing this!

I would say that if you aren't a student, oh well. Strap on an empty holster and walk around campus like you have business there!

What truly annoys me is that the Dean says, ". . .they intend to enact their constitutional right to express themselves. . ." and "While supporting the students right to express themselves. . ." while there's still a total disconnect regarding the 2nd Amendment as well as the Indiana State Constitution that states, "The people shall have a right to bear arms, for the defense of themselves and the State."

Ditto. I'm in Brownsburg, but I work in downtown Indy, not even 5 minutes from campus. I can supply two Uncle Mike's 6" revolver holsters and a Beretta 92 shoulder holster, first come, first served. I will want them back, of course. :)

You guys have my utmost support! And as an alumnus of the IU law school on the IUPUI campus, I'd be happy to drop an e-mail to the administration regarding my annual donation to the university this year if you get any push-back... That's not likely here in central Indiana though, even on a college campus (and I think the administration's e-mail above reflects that.)

Now, if you were to try this at IU-Bloomington, you'd probably have half the faculty staying home that day in counter-protest.

We're doing it here at Tech. The officers here in SCCC managed to get a vendor to donate (loan) a bunch of holsters for the event. Hoping it's big.

My OWB holster is right simple, so I'm doubting too many folks will recognize it for what it is, but heck, I'm wearing what I've got.

I'm participating here in Colorado on my campus!

The leader of our SCCC chapter also contacted me and a few other folks the other day, I volunteered to be a founding member of a group who was sought out by The Leadership Institute (http://www.leadershipinstitute.org/), and it looks as though we may be getting some funding from them for the cause.

In Indiana the policy in place has no legal jeopardy so non staff/students can open carry as they choose. Expect attention and would be advised to restrict your movement to the sidewalk by the public streets. Gotta go glue an empty holster to my wifes backpack.

Does anyone know if staff and faculty are going to participate as well?

I am staff and plan on wearing mine, but my holster is tiny (came with my XD). I know someone who might wear a old giant US Army holster. I hope to see a lot of people participate, but I havn't seen any posters around my side of the campus though.

Staff and faculty are welcome to participate. You are left just as defenseless on campus as the students are. Just please make sure that your employment contract allows you to do so - the school-student relationship is much different than the school-employee relationship. We would not want anyone to lose their job for protesting.
