I thought this would be fun. Add your gun related predictions for the year 2020.

I'll start.

1) The Glock carbine will be entering production

2) HK will still hate you

3) Lasermax will be in the business of manufacturing weapons, not sights.

4) The 9mm vs .45 debate will have been resolved.

5) There will be Tannerite bullets. No, you won't be able to buy them.

6) Campus carry will be mandatory for all college students.

In the year 2020 (someone cue the Conan O' Brien "Year 2000 theme please):
John Moses Browning will officially be worshipped by loyal gunnies everywhere.
Glock, trying to one up everyone will start making guns out of vinyl, instead of plastic.
Smith and Wesson will replace the dreaded lock, with the more PC friendly "double lock".
STI will gain significant market share due to the brave step of refusing to sell guns to **********
Speaking of **********, they will ban guns outright, thus ensuring that there is no crime whatsoever there ever again, cuz it's all the fault of ebil scawy guns (Also they will ban pools, fatty foods, automobiles, meat, vegetables, and anyone who doesn't use the word "trippy")

We will probably have directed energy weapons, but the S&W Model 10 and the Colt 1911 will still be around. Probably the SAA, too.

We will have ray gun vs. projectile gun debates, while the 9mm vs. .45 debate still rages on.

All military forces will use 2mm rifles.

Armed citizens will either be welcome and accepted members of society, or will be hiding in the hills and swamps. I see it going one way or the other.

The rest of the world may finally have enough and start to re-claim their liberties.

Everyone will STILL not be driving flying cars, and fast food restaurants will STILL not be staffed by robots.

7 Ammo sales will be regulated by the Federal government

9 LEO might be disarmed like the British
10 Auto loading handguns will be regulated to 10rd or less mags
11 Hopefully Texas will be its own country

Ok I'll bite:

1. 9mm vs 45 will still be going on regardless of whatever new cartridge is invented

2. 1911's will continue to keep gunsmiths employed by having more aftermarket parts than legos

3. CCW permits will be recognized nationwide

4. Ammunition will be so costly you can only shoot in self defense

5. Gas is so costly you can only shoot someone in your own house in self defense

6. Glocks will be overpriced because they are plastic and plastic is made of oil. Which will not be subsidized by the government

7. Hi points will be what they are designed for now: low income reliable shooters BUT prettier!

8. .223 will still be the military caliber because it has worked this long it can keep working

9. Independent politics will slowly be gaining influence because of the internet

10. Politicians will be scared because everyone that wants to, can carry a gun to their front door (if they walk to their house remember: gas is expensive)

11. I will be employed by a nuclear power plant because right now it is the best option

We won't have microstamping or smart guns cuz everybody will be required to wear the new glasses which act as a computer monitor thru heads-up display. 1. I am going to be one helluva Curmudgeon in 12 more years.

2. Semi-Auto firearm bans will have been implemented, including handguns, rifle and shotguns.

3. Civilians will not be allowed to have firearm platforms, or calibers as issued or used by LEO or Miltary.

So there goes 45ACP, 9mm, 12 gauge, Beretta 391, Rem 11-87, 1100, 870, Mossberg 500 and 590, Glock, HK, ...ARs and .223

4. New appreciation for formerly old fashioned and antiquated firearms and calibers.

Black-Powder, in handguns, rifles and shotguns.
Single shot , O/U and SxS shotguns
20 gauge , 28 ga, and .410
Revolvers,(single action and double action) in .22, 32, .38spl, .357, .44 special, 45 Colt...

Not being pessimistic, just optimistic folks can totally screw up and focus so much on "gun" they will not spend time on Freedom, and RKBA.

I hope not. Cheney is supporting Heller in favor of limits on governmental powers over firearms! A guy who spent much of his life in politics, with lots of authority only hampered by limits on authority is in favor of limiting that authority to stay closer to the consititution.
He even is at odds with the rest of the administration on that decision.

You know if you were in power and knew everything that was going to end up happening in the nation you would set yourself up to benefit from it to, that does not mean you would make political decisions for that purpose.
The Clintons are now multi millionaires after being in position to exploit that same inside knowledge and contacts.

A lot of Cheney's career is based around the defense industry, so it is safe to say that is where he has the most knowledge and therefore where he would also apply himself in entrepreneurial endeavors.

Regardless of how you feel though about the guy, you have to be amazed he is willing to stick up for gun rights even at odds with his administration. A guy that could continue to have access to weapons anyways as one of the elite, is in favor of the common man's right to arms and is not just going with the flow on that decision.

What won't change in twelve years?

1. NAFTA will be repealed when the United States is the one needing benefit from fair trade...

2. After finally admitting bankruptcy, the IMF restructures the American economy... after adopting certain UN provisions:

Ban virtually all firearms
No agricultural subsidies
Extremely limited military funding -- the right to defending your nation is not a nation's individual right, but a collective right, i.e., the UN
All tariffs are revoked, allowing significant amounts of imports from Europe and China and leaving no competitive domestic trade
Surrendering all budget adjustments for approval to an international body
And last but not least... a revision of the consititution to permit the stewardship of international councils to legislate on the U.S.'s behalf

Hey... that ain't science fiction... it's happening to many developing nations right now... and surprise, surprise, they ain't developing much...

I'm such a pessimist... here, there is a different path that we can take...

1. The government finally admits bankruptcy, the dollar is now officially worthless, the economy collapses, and civil war breaks out. Incidentally, the free states win:

And the South does rise again! Well, the Dakotas, Montana, Pennsylvania, Vermont, and New Hampshire, too. :)

12 years go you couldn't buy 11 round magazines. 12 years before that you could buy a new machine gun.

So in 12 years we will be able to buy new machine guns but will be limited to 10 round magazines....

My predictions:

1: 50 rds 9mm WWB $49.95
2: Someone will introduce the 9-forty - 9mm brass necked UP to .40 cal
3: The wildcat varmint round to shoot will be the .17-06
4: "ray guns" will still be experimental
5: California will have gone nowhere, and I mean it will have gone nowhere.
6: The 2A argument will be about what a "Militia Weapon" really means. "In '34 it couldn't have meant the same as we think it means now - that was like soo long ago"
7: CMP will be selling M16s returned from Vietnam- the ones that weren't ground up in the crusher.

By the year 2020:

1. I'll be retired for 5 years.
2. I will have moved to a place that is gun-friendly.
3. I will have built my own range on my own property.
4. I will have stockpiled lots of ammo.
5. I will have bought several more black rifles.
6. I will have bought hundreds of "real" magazines for all of my guns.

But, alas there will have been four presidential elections between now and then, so...

In the year 2020:

1. I'll have retired 5 years previous.
2. The gun-friendly place I moved to will not be gun-friendly anymore.
3. The range I had built will have been shut done by the EPA.
4. The ammo I stockpiled will have been banned because it contains lead or some other dumb reason.
5. The black rifles I owned are all banned- no grandfather clause.
6. All magazines that hold more than three rounds were banned- again no clause.
7. A poorly written ban on guns of .50 cal or more was passed and shotguns of more than 410ga and black powder guns of 50 cal and above are also banned.
8. I spend a lot of time regaling my grandkids about the good old gun days, but they think I’m telling tall tales.

Okay, I'm not really that paranoid, but there are times I read the news and have nightmares. :(

What a bunch of pessimists!

My forecast....

1911s will be popular, but the obsession with them will have waned after the 2011 centennial.

Gun bans will have been ruled unconstutitional. Section 922(o) likewise.

There will be a machinegun manufacturing excise tax of $2,500.

There will be nationwide CCW.

You will be able to buy replica 1903 Springfields.

The squeeze-cocking action of the HK P7 will make a comeback.

Pistols will be available with flip-up optical sights integrated into the gun.

This thread while certainly amusing is on the whole rather disheartening. I like to think that 12 years from now it will be more or less about the same. The civilian gun market is huge. Companies are making billions and billions of dollars. I wouldn't expect a radical change in 12 short years. 50 years maybe but not in a decade.

So I'll predict that ammo will be cheaper. Gun ownership will be at all time highs. Shooting sports will take off and become made for tv events. And the battle between pro and anti will be raging as always. I see a positive short term future.

Or...the Fed Gov will outlaw all ownership and there will be a lot of one eyed voting in the 2020 election.

cheese,
do you think the 7.62 vs 5.56 debate will be over?

Depends. 7.62x39 vs 5.56x45 debates will go on forever as AK collectors try to figure out whether they want an AK-47 or an AK-74.

The 7.62x51 vs 5.56x45 debate will end in the year 2015 when ATK introduces the .244 Federal Magnum, which outperforms both cartridges. It has .338 Lapua Magnum ballistics with .223 recoil and utilizes a Kyma-Interstellar-Cold-Kore-Atomic-Super-Strength (AKA: KiCKASS™) bullet designed by Extreme Shock. LMT and FN will both introduce competing rifle platforms chambered for it. Keltec will introduce the first pistol chambered for it at the 2018 Shot & Defensive Electronics Show. It will ship in 2020.

Hmmm...plasma ray guns in only 12 years? Our military has used the .223 in some form of AR platform since 1964 (4 decades). Doubtful there will be much of a change in a mere 12 years. But you never know.
I don't expect 12 years to bring much change in anything...except increasing oil prices and the domino effect which comes with that.

I suspect by that time we'll have a new way of moving projectiles. Smokeless powder still dominates, and beacuse of that there can't be any major changes in firearm design. But smokeless has been dominant now since the 1890's so it's high time for a change. Possibly some kind of liquid or gas mixture of greater power with little or no debris.

Viable self-contained cartridges have been around about 150 years. Military use of cartridge arms has been around since the Civil War. I'm not sure a paltry 32 more years will have a great impact on that part of firearms technology.
Maybe someone will reintroduce the GyroJet? :)

4) The 9mm vs .45 debate will have been resolved.

You're much more optimistic than I am. I don't think that debate will ever be settled unless both calibers fade away completely. Even then the debate will rage on in nursing homes across the nation.

AK's and AR's will be banned for civilian use.
We will still have "deer rifles" that are more powerful.
Anything that looks scary will be outlawed.
Again, we will still have "deer rifles" that are more powerful.
Criminals will run rampant.
The Govmint will continue to "protect" us by passing more laws which limit our rights and are, of course, ignored by criminals.

OR

AR's and AK's will be commonplace and won't scare anyone anymore.
So many common citizens will have stopped criminal activity with legally owned private firearms that the news media actually runs it on the evening news and applauds it.
The common citizen will be so fed up with criminals we will stop coddling them and sending them, when we did, to "prisons" that have better living conditions than many hard working folks. Prisons will be prison again.
Your deer rifle can be in the back window of your pick up again, even if it is an AR, and no one will steal it. Sort of like it used to be.
Possession of and practice with small arms will be encouraged and subsidized by the Govmint, because it keeps crime down.

YOU DECIDE - SEND MONEY _ GET OUT AND VOTE !

1. Due to the SCOTUS rule that the second amendment stands as written, all gun laws have been abolished.
2. The United States becomes the safest country in the world as criminals no longer know who is armed.
3. Due to the lack of restriction on guns, they market becomes flooded and all guns are inexpensive.
4. Firearms can be ordered through the mail, just like the old days.
5. Anti-gun politicians no longer exist. Having either renounced their views, or been hanged for high treason.

Levi's introduces type 357 jeans. They cater to CCW since it is nationwide. They have 41 pockets total.

-The 9mm vs. .45 debate that has raged for a century will continue uninterrupted.

-Al Gore will still be whining about the 200 election and still be making outrageous claims.

-Winchester, Remington, Ruger, Horrnady, Federal and a number of other companies will have introduced 3 dozen new rifle cartridges, and the .30-06 will still be the most popular hunting round.

-Even though no one ever cared, and despite being an average looking no-talent, Paris Hilton will still have media coverage.

-The few American gunmakers who don't yet offer an AR or 1911, will. Except Hi Point.

-Most cars will be powered by diesel and hydrogen. Hybrids will be a thing of the past, as they should.

-The Kel-Tec RFB will be almost ready for production.

-California will have become an independent nation, and the national language will be spanish. Colorado, Arizona, Texas, Nevada and New Mexico will push to take advantage of PRC's illegal immigrant amnesty by exporting ours. The end result will be cheap consumer products now come from California instead of China.

4. David Brooks will be president.
5. The nation will edge ever closer to a conflict along regional lines.
6. Osama bin Laden will die of natural causes.

I'm guessing not a helluva lot if this liberal trend keeps hold. Let us not forget, America is the country that spawned all of the technological breakthroughs of the last 200 years, of those 200 years we have leaped light years beyond the previous 2000. Liberals want us back to a Lords and Vassals type society where free thought and capitalism is squashed...screw that.

The 1911 has been around since...well, yeah...I'm guessing it will still be going strong by 2020 :)
