Monday will be the 2843rd annual anniversary for one of the most famous battle dates in history.
According to the History Channel I saw this week, it marks the beginning of the 3 day war that was the result of King Leonidas' battle cry - "Molon Labe"! I hope to recount it next week to all that will listen.
Seems to have become our slogan around here....;)

I just picked up a copy of 'Gates of Fire', and I'm planning a retirement trip with my Dad to Greece. Is that overdoing it? :)

I'm hoping for a photo op with this guy:

Well, actually ...

there are some calendar errors that have accumulated over the years.

So the actual anniversary is April 19th :D

I keep watching Doco's on Thermopylae, including the "Spartan" one the other day on History Channel. I have yet to see anyone reference the "Molon Labe" cry.

Hopefully this one will.

Met one guy who had a statute of Leonidas on his desk. I pointed out that the helmet was Roman and not that of a Grecian hoplite. Still, it was an impressive little souvenir from Greece.

Betcha in Rome they sell it as Horatio (of the bridge fame).

Also, don't forget to leave flowers (or maybe a spent shell casing... I dunno) at the marker where the battle happened.
