just bought a AK 74, love it, however, the bolt carrier/gas piston/ charging handle look like they were blued in the 1800's. was thinking about dremeling the goop off and giving it a nice polish though i was advised against that. is there a chemical way to remove the old blue or goop or whatever it is

If it's blued, any of these will take it off.
Paint & Parkerizing is another matter.
