What would a Colt M1911 made in 1917 be worth?

It was my wife's grandad's service issue (WW2) weapon. It's not in really great shape, but it is a historical icon. My father-in-law goes out and shoots it, which I think is great, but I'm wondering, should he put it on ice? Is it worth too much to be shot out?

If none of the military stampings have been filed off and no modifications have been made it is worth 700 to 2500$, depending on condition. Without examining it, value is hard to determine. a few hundred rounds a year won't hurt it unless it is in real good condition.

I would start here if you're just casually interested. Look for markings....
