I was reading an autobiography today and the author writes of using his "Mauser .303" on game, around 1900 or 1901. Was there such a beast, or was he misremembering?

TIA,

Could have been.
At one time Mauser made a wide range of actions with bolt faces and magazines to suit many cartridges. They made slanted magazines for rimmed rounds so they could be loaded without the rims interlocking and jamming up the feed. So it is entirely possible for a well-fixed sahib to have had a .303 Mauser. I say well-fixed, because it would have probably cost more than a Lee-Speed sporter of the same style and caliber but on the British Lee action.

Ken Waters did a write-up recently of an original John Rigby & Co. Mauser sporter in .303 British. It had the slanted mag box for proper feeding. The article appeared in Rifle magazine within the past year or so.

Best,
Joe

*I remember that article.
He originally wrote that one up some years ago when he first got it and had it rebored. The bore was rough so he had it rebored to .303-.338 to save the markings.

The author probably meant something like the Rigby Mauser mentioned. A .303 Mauser would have the advantage of a great ammo supply in the British controlled areas.
A small number of Model 98s (L Model Short Rifles) were made by the Czechs for Lithuania. They were delivered with a huge supply of ammo.
I have never seen a Lithuanian mauser of any caliber.
