I have been offered a JC Higgins Model 101.25 .410 bolt action, tubular magazine, shotgun for $40. Very nice condition. Proof mark is 13E. I don't care for the safety as it cocks when the bolt is closed on a live round and must be shoved forward to lock. Good buy? :)

I'd probably buy it mainly because theres nothing here that cheap. But I have several junk guns waiting to be sent to Numrich. The gun is made by Stevens

Standard Catalog Of Firearms states Sears shotguns range in value from $100 - $3,500 depending on make model, decoration and relative rarity. So $40 seems like a fair price. You may also try Gunbroker and see what they are going for there.

Sears 101.25 translates either to a Stevens 39A or a 59A. Stevens made a multitude of bolt action shotguns over the decades. Good solid utility guns.. They are listed at 200 in excellent condition ( read like new ). I fell this is overly generous, from what I've seen at recent gun shows, a used bolt action Stevens like new in the box can be picked up for 150 or less and the dealer will have a big smile when he takes your money. The same reference values are 100 in good. Unforunatly modern store brand guns such as Sears, Western Auto, Monkey Ward, will all be valued at 15 to 20 less than if they had the parent company roll marked on the barrel. To be able to be sold at a discount the manufactures will use cheaper wood. less time on finishing, no checkering and other short cuts such as the use of plastic on non critical parts..

Thank you. I bought it. Will make a good squirrel gun. Had a .410 many years ago. Single-shot. Wish I had it back. Reporter at the local paper asked me if a .410 could kill a man. Duh!

I just picked one up today for $100 and I thought I got a deal. Man that's great deal. I agree with smee781: $40 for a working gun is a deal any day of the week.

Glad you went for it. A JC Higgins .410 bolt action is the very first gun I ever shot when I was about 9. I'll never forget the kick while I even had on an orange life vest and it was low brass!

I wish I still had that old gun (it was fairly new then, in the early 60's)!:)
