I was at Gander Mountain (yes, their prices are usually crazy) yesterday and saw the Smith and Wesson MP 15 for 799.95 after a $100 mail in rebate.Good buy or not?

Which one is it? If it is the one with the full picatinny handguard is sounds pretty damn good to me. The one at Sportsmans Wharehouse is $1300

If it has a detachable carry handle its a great price. Often the less popular models with fixed handle are priced lower to get them to sell.

I think it has a detachable handle. There wasn't one on the rifle that was on display but I think the detachable handle does come with it.

Auburn -It just has the Picatinny rail on top, not on the handguard.

I think this is the model: http://www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=11101&storeId=10001&productId=44930&langId=-1&parent_category_rn=33803&isFirearm=Y

Yes, that's a good buy. It's 899.99 retail most places, (like mine) and S&W will tip you back 100 with the mail in rebate... it's a great AR and you wont be disappointed in it.
(as far as AR's go that is... I'm still not a fan)

No, it's the -OR (or ORC) model:

If you go to Gander's website and look at the online flyer, it's in there. Note there's no handle or sights in the pic.

Ahhh... thanks S4Lee. Okay, is that still a good buy?

I don't claim to be an AR expert, but I do own a M&P15FT, and it's a fine rifle - as good as most ARs on the market, and a lifetime waranty. The price is $300 off MSRP, so it sounds like a good deal, but consider how much you're willing to spend on sights and/or optics for it ($300-400 for a real EOTech or Aimpoint? >$1000 for an ACOG? Etc...). If you want the carry handle, or at least the option of iron sights, it may be better to go with one that comes with those options.

I am going to go against the grain on this one. The rifle does not have any Iron sites on the rifle. If you are going to use it as an optic only rifle I guess its fair but you can get the same rifle with the A2 Front post and the detachable carry handle for only about $70 more.

If you are going to get backup irons it will cost you at least another $150. It'sa good rifle but just not as great a deal as it appears on the surface.

Appreciate all the info. I was planning to mount a scope on it. I'm new to the AR-15 variants so if there are any more that you all could recommend that would be great too. Of course, this thing is going on layaway first. :o I just wanted to know how good of a deal it was. I guess I'll be at Gander Mountain tomorrow. :banghead:

If you are mounting optics with no irons its a good deal. Slap a Eotech, Aimpoint or ACOG on top and you will be good to go.

rellascout~Cool. I think I will definitely go it for it then. And thanks again (you and everyone else) for the help.

Try to pay it off before the end of the month if you can so you get the $100 rebate.
